6 Things Quality Universities Strive For

October 27, 2023 by Pam Maynard

Quality Universities Aim for 6 Important Things

Universities go through cycles. During the 19th century, some of today’s top institutions were actually quite low down most students’ lists of priorities, with many failing to offer any sort of reputable education at all. Over time, they improved, and others fell down the league tables, and so on. It’s a constant churn. Let’s look at what quality universities should aim for to be effective.

This begs the question as to what these institutions should focus on to be successful. It’s an important question for students, parents, administrators, and faculty alike.

Academic Excellence

At the top of the list should be academic excellence. Universities live and die on the quality of their research and prize-winning research.

Universities spend significant sums of money on accreditation and reaffirmation consultation in working towards this goal. Official statuses like these enable institutions to attract the top students which, in turn, ensures they get the most dynamic professors and teachers and so on.

Critical Thinking

Related to this, universities should also focus on critical thinking. Students should have the tools to come to their own conclusions on matters, based on evidence and reason. Universities should not return to being indoctrination camps as they were in the 19th century in many parts of England and the U.S.

Critical thinking means being able to look at the world dispassionately, without bias. Universities need to teach students how to interpret and even accept reality, even when it goes against their desires or values.

Continuous Improvement

Continuous improvement is another thing universities should strive toward. Getting better all the time in a competitive environment is essential for attracting students and remaining relevant.

Improvement can occur across the board, not just in the academic arena. For instance, many universities thrive on the back of their sports facilities or accommodation. Teaching quality can also play a role. Improving across the board can attract higher-achieving students which, in turn, improves the university’s reputation.

Effective Student Support

Top-quality universities also offer effective support. Many students struggle with physical and mental health issues while on campus. However, offering them support can be an excellent way to get them to complete their finals and ultimately obtain the degree they want.

Student support should come in two forms: pastoral and therapeutic. Pastoral support is simply having someone affiliated with the college students visit for advice or guidance. Therapeutic assistance is more medical in nature and geared towards dealing with mental health issues.

Community Engagement

Universities should also engage with local communities. Colleges can provide a stream of highly skilled workers who can benefit the local economy.

Partnerships with local businesses can provide a framework for students to find jobs after completing their courses. And universities can gain a reputation as institutions that facilitate entry into the labor market.

Student Sucess

Finally, quality universities should focus on student success. Making their outcomes the key driver of policies and education can have a transformative effect on students’ lives long term. Metrics to follow include retention rates, graduation rates, and employability. The more students who can find work at the end of their degrees in suitable jobs, the better.
