The Little Things To Fuel Your Health As You Get Older

August 18, 2021 by Pam Maynard

Some people think getting older is just about getting weaker. When they start to have a bad back, or they don’t bounce back from a hangover as quickly as they used to, we realize that it’s about making those smaller changes.

It could be about improving your nutrition or exercising a little bit more, but when you hit your 40s, it is so important to start addressing the little health concerns that can get bigger later in life. With this in mind, what should you keep an eye on?

Your Oral Health

When our oral health suffers, so can the rest of our body. Because un-flossed food can infiltrate our bloodstream, this could cause issues later in life, but also, when it comes to your oral health and your teeth, looking after these should be one of our biggest priorities, because even something as little as a crooked tooth can play on our mind.

But this is where devices like custom clip-on veneers can come in handy. But the solutions are simple: brush your teeth properly, floss, and have dental checkups!

Help Your Metabolism

Your metabolism slows down by 2% every single decade, so stimulating your metabolism can fuel your weight loss. The way to do this is to, very simply, eat breakfast! The other side of the coin is exercising.

It’s important to give your metabolism the help it needs, and while many people think about running, this is not the best way to stimulate your metabolism. The best approach is to do high-intensity training, because this doesn’t just get to work while you are exercising, but it can work for a couple of hours after you have left the gym! Think about compound exercises, and make sure that you use weights.

Strength training is one of the best ways to get your metabolism up, but it will get you stronger, improve your balance, and strengthen your bones. Your bone density can deteriorate with every decade, so keeping it strong is crucial. Must read: The Best Exercise Books.

Fueling Your Brain

Your brain is a combination of fat, muscle, and water, and making sure that you give your brain the nutrients it needs, such as protein, and good fats can help to boost the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, which can help you if you have a poor memory, or are prone to low moods. Think about high-quality breakfasts that are full of protein, like eggs and fish.

Additionally, think about the impact of stress on your brain, especially with regard to your mental health. When you are meeting up with friends, you will boost your self-esteem, reduce stress, which can mean a reduced risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The important thing to remember as we get older is that it’s not just about fixing problems, but it’s about maintaining our health. As we get older, the small problems can present themselves in much larger ways if we don’t treat them now. Get to work on treating these things, and enjoy a healthy and happy life, not just into your 40s, but beyond.
