Seven Clever Ways to Teach Children to Dress Themselves

August 18, 2021 by Pam Maynard

Being a parent is not an easy job! There is always something to do and something new to teach your children. One of the lessons you have to teach them early on is how to dress up. From shirts and dresses to shoes, they need to learn how to do it themselves. It can be a little difficult to do this for first-time parents, and they can always use a few tips.

Seven Clever Ways to Teach Children Dress Themselves

So let us see what are the few ideas you can use to help your children learn how to dress up on their own.

7 Ways to Teach Your Children

1. Sit them down:

One of the best ideas to teach children anything new is to sit them down and talk about it clearly. If you are teaching them about how to put on their clothes, try explaining it to them slowly. Use their clothes and encourage them to try and put on one piece of clothing by themselves every morning. Once they notice how you are doing it and you have already spoken to them about dressing themselves up, they will try and do it themselves.

2. Removing clothes should be taught first:

Removing clothes is easier than wearing them. So start teaching your children how to remove clothes. After they come back from school or the playground, ask them to take their shirts and pants off to send for washing. Tell them how they can pull the shirts off without getting their hands stuck. Help them out if anything goes wrong, but encourage them to remove their clothes by themselves. This will also help them understand how to put them on quickly.

3. Button up first:

Buttoning up is a good place to start. It is an easy activity that your child can pick up quickly. Give them a shirt with buttons and show them how to button and unbutton the shirt. Tell them to practice it a few times and then let them put the shirt on and button it up. Once they enjoy the whole process, they will easily pick up the skill.

4. Inside out of the clothes:

Learning the inside and outside of the clothes is one of the first things your child should learn. Now, this can be confusing for someone very young, but it is better to start early. Show them the stitches and how they can differentiate. Ask them about which is the outside of the dress when you are showing them how they should wear a piece of clothing. This way, they can learn every day!

5. Use elastic pants:

One of the easiest ways to teach children how to dress themselves up is by using elastic pants. Soft materials with elastic waist can help your kids to wear them easily. They just have to be shown how to fit into them, and they can do the rest. There are great designs for kids’ pyjamas that they will love to wear.

6. Go for easy-fit shoes:

It is not necessary to start with shoes that need to be tied up. A good idea is to start with fitting shoes that can be worn easily. For your princess, you can use a princess play shoe. All you need to do is teach your child the right and left of their hands and feet and ask them to slide their feet into the shoes.

If you want to be a little stylish, you can give them shoes with velcro that can be worn by a child easily. Once they have learned how to wear simple easy-fit shoes, you can teach them to tie their shoes and then wear them every day.

7. Zippers, hoodies, and dresses can help:

Clothes that come with external additions like zippers and bands can be helpful for kids who are learning to dress. A pullover or a hoodie can simply be worn over the head and fitting the arms. If a dress comes with a zipper, they can easily learn to pull up the zipper and also remove these types of clothes easily. For girls, buy dresses that come as overalls and can be worn by them over the head. Buttons will always be a good place to start.

When you are teaching your little children something new, there are two main tricks to use – encouragement and patience. It may take them some time to understand how their daily activities are done. But if you are encouraging them to do things by themselves, they will gladly start practicing on their own. Be patient at all times and try being a friend. This will help you win them over and teach them those same values which are so important to learn.
