While grand gestures are really nice, they’re not always necessary to show your love. Furthermore, grand gestures often wreak inauthenticity when they’re followed up with consistent actions that display love. Besides, there are small ways you can show your family members that you love them on a regular basis.
Listen to Them
This tip is two-fold. First, you can become intentional about listening to them by serving as a sounding board. Sometimes, a person doesn’t want your advice. They really just want a listening ear so they can vent. If you’re able to listen without offering advice or judgment, that can be a simple way to show love.
Secondly, be intentional about truly listening to what they’re saying instead of listening to respond. There’s a difference. Oftentimes, people listen with an ear to defend their perspective instead of listening to really hear and understand what the other person is saying.
Celebrate Them
There are a lot of lonely, isolated people in the world. When you’re able to have someone you can share your life with, don’t take them for granted. If their birthday is coming up, make sure you make arrangements to celebrate them. Whether it’s a gift card, a delicious meal or a fun party, a special book, celebrate the people in your life.
You can even shout it out loud by setting up one of those fun birthday yard signs. It’ll show them how much you care from a public perspective as well.
Express Love in Their Love Language
You probably know how you receive love, but don’t assume that’s how another person does. Learn the love languages of the people in your life.
If their love language is quality time, find ways to spend quality time together without the use of phones or any other electronic distractions. If their love language involves words of affirmation, look for great ways to build them up and encourage them.
Speak with Love
Always watch the way you speak to people. When you’re dealing with your family members, it’s really easy to give them the scraps and put on a show for those on the outside. Instead, work on your conversation skills, tone and inflections.
Be mindful of how much you joke and the way you do it. Words can really hurt when they’re used inappropriately. By being mindful of your words and speaking with kindness, you’ll create an atmosphere your loved ones will want to be around.
Showing love to your family members doesn’t have to be rocket science. The key is to become intentionally thoughtful. When you spread love and make it habitual, it’s much easier to live in peace and harmony with those around you.
