A Heartfelt Story of a Little Girl and Her Grandfather
As a parent of two young children, we enjoy reading books together. It’s something we do during the day at random as well as before bedtime. The whole family looks forward to this quality time we get to spend together and we cherish every moment. My children have gone from picking books with bright colors, shapes, and pictures to choosing books that have a more detailed yet wonderful story line. They like hearing stories about things they can relate to, like having certain feelings or different experiences they might encounter as a child. I enjoy reading them stories that have a beautiful message and I love nurturing their love for reading at such an early age.
Don’t Drink The Pink by B.C.R. Fegan and illustrated by Lenny Wen. This beautifully written and illustrated book takes you on a journey with a little girl named Madeline and her Grandfather Gilderberry. While she sees the world in her grandfather’s eyes, her parents aren’t completely thrilled with his cooky-ness. The story takes you to Madeline’s birthday each year where her grandfather gives her the gift of magical potions, starting on her first birthday. Each potion gave her a magical birthday experience that she would never forget. As she got older, her grandfather also grew old, but her birthday experiences with him were something she looked forward to and would cherish forever. Year after year, Madeline selects a new potion with exciting results, however each time she reaches for her enchanted birthday present, her grandfather reminds her of only one rule – ‘don’t drink the pink’.
About Don’t Drink The Pink

Filled with secrets to uncover and brimming with imagination, Don’t Drink the Pink explores a number of basic concepts including colors, numbers and the reality of growing older.
My Thoughts:
My family cannot get enough of this special book. It’s our favorite book to grab from the bookshelf! My children love seeing which magical experience Madeline will have year after year with her grandfather’s enchanting potion. Each year she is allowed to drink one colored potion, except for the pink one! One potion made her breathe fire and another potion turned her into a mermaid. It’s such a thrill to see what each page will bring us next. The rhyming is catchy and illustration is stunning! Towards the end, the story gently eases you in for the reality of growing older. It’s a tough subject to discuss with children when a family member is no longer with them. But, Don’t Drink The Pink is a beautiful message for children to see the importance of holding onto the beautiful memories we create with our loved ones and never forgetting them.
Grab yourself a copy of Don’t Drink The Pink and find out what happens when Madaline finally gets to drink the pink potion! This will be your family’s new favorite book to read, over and over again! Although the recommended age for this book is 3-8, I think it’s a wonderful story for all ages! The anticipation of what color potion she get’s to drink next and what magical ability she will have on her birthday is exciting! Don’t Drink The Pink would make a great birthday present since the story is based on celebrating Madeline’s birthday!
