Every single person on the Earth will feel anxiety at some time in their lives. However, some of us seem to get more than their fair share, which can make even typical day-to-day tasks very challenging. The good news is that you can use some smart strategies to get through the anxious days. Read on to find out what they are.

Deep breathing 

It may sound simple, but correct breathing when anxious can make a massive difference. When our bodies are anxious, we tend to tense up something that encourages us to breathe in a shallow way. Unfortunately, this breathing further compounds in our troubled state because it sends a message to the brain activating the sympathetic nervous system. This is the stem that takes care of the fight-or-flight response. 

However, by changing the way we breathe, we can activate our parasympathetic nervous system, making the body and mind much calmer. With that in mind, try practical belly breathing, digraphic breathing, or square breathing next time you feel panic setting in. 

Medications

Many medications have proven to be helpful with anxiety. Around 20 years ago, benzodiazepines were commonly prescribed because of their calming effect, although, recently, there has been a great deal of criticism of these types of medicine because of their addictive qualities. 

Then there are SSRIs, which are currently prescribed for anxiety disorders such as OCD and GAD. The reason is that the level of serotonin the brain can absorb is believed to have a role in causing anxiety. 

Of course, some people prefer a much more natural option, such as medical marijuana. Now legal in Canada and some states in the US. For the health-conscious, you don’t even need to smoke it as there is a range of options that you can visit this website to find out more about. Mindfulness 

Many people suffering from anxiety also find mindfulness, and in particular mindful acceptance of the sensation of fear in the body to be beneficial. Through the process of mindful acceptance, you acknowledge that the feelings are there without trying to block or get rid of them. You can then focus on something else that is of value to you, despite the uncomfortable feelings. This is a strategy that can be very helpful during an anxiety attack.

Exercise 

Working out your body is actually an excellent way of coping with anxiety. This is for two reasons; the first is that by exercising, you are helping your body’s system of elimination. That is all that adrenaline and cortisol from stress in your system are processed and worked out, leaving you feeling much calmer. 

Additionally, when we work out, our bodies create happy hormones known as endorphins. This means that we get rid of the bad stuff, and also welcome in the good stuff. This is something that can make a massive difference when your body and mind feel racked with anxiety.
