The Various Symptoms of Auditory Processing Disorder

July 6, 2019 by Pam Maynard

Do you know what auditory processing disorder is? It is a kind of disorder that affects certain number of children and the problem is quite rare. APD is that disorder which prevents a child from learning and grasping concepts like other students. Kids who are affected by this disorder,  cannot hear the class lessons properly. They cannot concentrate on their studies. This is due to the fact that their brain fails to coordinate with the sense organ in order to process information. The brain cannot process information as it cannot recognize or interpret a sound.

The Various Symptoms of Auditory Processing Disorder

To prevent problem of APD, an early diagnosis is required. If your child fails to understand what is being said or fails to interpret and discriminate among the information, it is time you schedule an auditory processing disorder test for child. Due to auditory processing disorder, children fail to differentiate between the sounds of words. They cannot understand anything. Even if the words are uttered clearly and loudly, the child cannot make out what is being said. This problem seems to aggravate when there is a noise in the background. They fail to understand a speech and they cannot explain anything with proper words or definition. Auditory processing disorder is also known as central auditory processing disorder.  It is a hearing problem of school aged children. In this case, the brain of the child does not coordinate with his or her ears. They cannot concentrate on their study because they cannot understand anything.

What are the Ways to Detecting Auditory Processing Disorder?

You may feel that children can still hear clearly like anyone else and understand pure tones that are delivered in a quiet and relaxed environment. A person who recognizes sounds and is able to make distinction between speeches is not having hearing trouble. Kids having auditory processing disorder usually face difficulty in processing information. They actually don’t have problem in hearing. They cannot interpret what is being said. If the problem of Auditory Processing Disorder is not identified early, then there can be a problem in the speech or language and communication. When it comes to the symptoms, it may vary from being mild to severe.

Symptoms of APD you should know

An auditory processing disorder test for child is very much needed if the child shows the following symptoms:

  • He is getting distracted easily when there is some noise at the background
  • If the child gets angry whenever there is a noise
  • If the child finds it hard to follow certain directions no matter how easy they are
  • Difficulty in following and comprehending abstract information
  • If simplest of math problems are tough
  • Difficulty in reading, writing and comprehending

Do not misunderstand auditory processing disorder with other kinds of behavioral disorders. Don’t mix APD with anxiety, depression and attention deficit disorder. It may be that someone is suffering from auditory processing disorder and attention deficit disorder at the same time. So you need to consult with the doctor and go for the auditory processing disorder test for child.

What Kind of Evaluation is Required?

If a child shows signs of Auditory Processing Disorder, then it is important to take comprehensive audiological evaluation that encompasses the following:

  • Audiological evaluation
  • Case history
  • Auditory processing test battery

Basing on the test results, you may take further recommendations and you can consult with your doctor for further evaluation. It is still possible for the child to learn and understand things with the help of special equipment.

It is important to get evaluated for auditory processing disorder as the disorder may ruin the future of the child. Learning disability is the obvious consequence of auditory processing disorder.
