How to Eat on a Budget and Stay Healthy

February 18, 2019 by Pam Maynard

Can you eat on a budget yet stay healthy? You’ve probably answered a quick no to this question. And who can blame you? Healthy food doesn’t come cheap. What’s cheap is junk food, but we all know how unhealthy it can be.

As you’d expect, this cost difference makes it harder for you to make healthy dietary choices. But here’s some good news. You can eat a healthy diet, despite being on a budget. And here’s how.

How to Eat on a Budget and Stay Healthy

Eat at Home

Do you eat out regularly? Ever compared the cost of a dinner for two at a fancy restaurant and that of feeding your family? You’ll be surprised if you did. The price of the dinner easily feeds a family of four. Obviously, eating out gives you less value for money. So, why not cook at home more often?

Buy Frozen Produce

Unless you buy them at a farmers market, fresh fruits and vegetables are almost always expensive. But there’s a way to get them at bargain prices. Just buy them frozen. In fact, they’re more nutritious this way. Remember, excess produce is frozen while it’s still fresh, so it never loses its nutrients. Even so, steer clear of seasoned frozen produce, for it contains salt and chemicals.

Buy Unprocessed Foods

Ever wondered why whole grains and cereals cost less than their refined cousins? Likewise, why do you pay less for a block of cheese and more for shredded cheese? The answer is the same in both cases. Whole foods require less processing. That’s why they’re cheaper, despite being healthier.

Buy Ugly Produce

You heard that right. Buy ugly produce. These are fruits or vegetables that, though healthy and safe, have what can be best described as a cosmetic deformity. In short, they don’t look good enough to make it to the shelves. For this reason, they’re disposed of. Ask the grocer to sell them to you, and they’ll gladly oblige at a fraction of the cost.

Buy Less Expensive Cuts of Meat

Chicken breasts, fish, and prime cuts of meat are your first choice if you’re a meat lover. But they are expensive and rightly so. For this reason, buy cheaper cuts like chicken thighs, pork shoulders, or lamb necks when you’re on a budget. Only note that being tougher, they require different cooking methods to make them tender.

Buy Meat Substitutes

If you’re too squeezed for cash to afford meat regularly, or if you want to give up meat altogether, what choice do you have? Only one: buy meat substitutes. And in particular, go for canned fish, eggs, or legumes. These substitutes are not just protein-rich, but they’re also cheap and nourishing. Also, they last long even without refrigeration.

Reuse Leftovers

Instead of throwing away leftover food, why don’t you make use of it? Start by cooking large meals instead of small ones, and then freeze the leftovers in single portions. In the following day or days, figure out how to use these portions. For instance, make sandwiches from the leftover chicken, pork, or beef roast. Or, make soups or pot pies. This way you save yourself both time and money. And here’s a quick reminder. This list is, by no means, exhaustive. Click here to see more tips from topratedanything.com

Despite what you may think, maintaining a healthy diet when you’re on a budget is possible. All it takes is making the right buying decisions, cutting back on unnecessary expenses, and re-using food you’d otherwise throw away.
