How to Detect Mental Illness in Teens as They Grow

April 30, 2018 by Pam Maynard

Mental illness isn’t something that just happens overnight. There are warning signs that could indicate a problem. You may not be aware of what the behaviors you’ve observed mean for your child. Here are some of things that could be indicators that your teen is struggling with their mental health.

How to Detect Mental Illness in Teens as They Grow

Difficulty Getting or Staying Asleep

Getting enough sleep each night is an important part of being able to stay healthy. Physical health is linked to mental health, and vice versa. You may noticed that your teen doesn’t seem to be getting enough sleep. It’s not odd for a teenager to want to stay up half the night and then sleep late. Your teenager may be suffering with insomnia or some other problem sleeping. This could be an early symptom that your teenager is struggling with a mental health problem.

Withdrawal from Friends

As your teenager grows, it’s normal for them to start pulling away from you. This is their way of trying to separate their identity. If you notice that they’re starting to pull away from their friends, you need to talk to them about it. There may be an issue that occurred with their friends. If they tell you that nothing’s wrong, this could be a sign that they’re experiencing depression. Approximately 20% of all teens experience depression. In some cases, they may require intervention so that it doesn’t become a more serious problem.

Loss of Appetite

Weight loss and not wanting to eat can be early signs that your teen is having trouble coping with something in their life. While having a loss of appetite may just be a symptom of depression, it could also indicate an eating disorder. Get your teen help before they start to develop physical health issues due to their refusal to eat. Remember, you can always click here for more info about eating disorder treatment options. It may require that they seek counseling. Eating disorder treatment facilities may also be the next step in the process.

Destructive Behaviors

Your teen acting out may be the only way that they feel as though they can express themselves. This destructive behavior could be towards others or even themselves. Your teen may be struggling at school or getting into trouble around your neighborhood. Another common thing that parents blow off is their teen making disturbing comments. Pay attention to the things that your teen says so that you can get them help when they need it.

Mental illness signs can start to appear in children of any age. If you notice any types of behavior that is worrisome to you, ask your doctor about it. They could be signs of a mental health problem with your child.
