How to Find the Right Doctor for Your Loved Ones

April 29, 2018 by Pam Maynard

It’s important that you find the right doctor for your family. Studies have shown that people do better health wise when they feel as though they have a connection to their doctor. This may leave you wondering where to start your search. Here are some ways that you can find the right doctor for you and your family.

How to Find the Right Doctor for Your Loved Ones

Ask for Recommendations

Ask friends and family for recommendations for doctors in the area. Give more weight to recommendations that are provided to you by people who work in the healthcare field. They often have first hand experience with things that you hadn’t considered important in your search. You can also look at doctor reviews online to help you narrow down your search.

Search through Your Insurance Provider

Most insurance providers have a website that will allow you to search for doctors in your area. You can narrow your criteria down based on gender and the field of practice. The most common doctor that you’ll be searching for is a family medicine doctor. From there, you can read more about the doctor’s experience and their profile. This baseline information can help you to get a better sense of the doctor themselves before you decide to schedule an appointment with them.

Call Around

How the medical office works and flows is just as important as the doctor themselves. This will let you know if you’re going to have trouble scheduling an appointment and how the office handles itself. Ask questions regarding the clinic, and any other concerns that you may have in selecting a doctor. The receptionist should be able to help you or direct you to the office manager.

Schedule a Sit-down

It can be difficult to judge a person’s character from their resume. You want to make sure that the doctor you select will be compatible with the needs of your family. Schedule a visit so that you can see how the doctor interacts with you and your loved ones. Consider this a trial run to see if they pass the test to become your doctor full-time.

It can be challenging to find a doctor that will suit the needs of your family. The personality of the doctor as well as their experience does make a difference. The best place to start your search is generally through your health insurance provider. From there, you can branch out and get into the specifics of what you’re looking for in the right doctor.
