How to Help Your Child Manage Their ADHD Behavior

January 30, 2018 by Pam Maynard

Did you know 11% of Children are Diagnosed with ADHD?

Children are often full of energy and find sitting for long periods of time to feel challenging. For many children this is just part of childhood. However, for 11% of children, their energy levels and lack of focus are much more serious. For such children, their hyperactivity and inability to focus on a task can drastically interfere with their ability to live a normal life. These children have ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. If your child has an ADHD diagnosis, there are plenty of ways you can help your child manage their behavior. Here is what you need to know:

How to Help Your Child Manage Their ADHD Behavior

Establish Routines

Children who suffer with ADHD find that steady routines are a great way to help them manage their behaviors. Routines are very comforting and help children to understand what is expected of them each day. When each day is hectic and unpredictable, it can stress out any child, but it is especially stressful to children who suffer from ADHD. The lack of routine can make it even more difficult for these children to control their behavior and make good decisions. Parents need to establish routines and stick to them to help their child.

Task Management

Many people with ADHD find it very difficult to complete tasks. The tasks seem overwhelming and the individual is unable to break the tasks down into manageable chunks. Parents can help their children by breaking the tasks down into many little tasks.

In some cases, kids will need a task to be visibly broken down by means of notes or a whiteboard. Parents will need to head this up and assist the child with breaking down the tasks in a way they can understand.

Diet

There has been much research conducted on the effect of diet on ADHD symptoms. Large amounts of sugar, caffeine and preservatives are often believed to make ADHD symptoms worse. Helping your child to eat fresh, whole foods and cutting back on sugar and caffeine can help establish a better balance in your child’s health and, thus, create a better balance in their behavior.

Supplements, Medication & Treatment

Many families have turned to supplements or medication which can help their child focus calm their hyperactive urges. The FDA has recently approved medicinal foods such as Vayarin to help children with ADHD. These products combine all-natural substances such as fish oil to better balance the lipids in the brain. This helps children stay more focused and calm during their everyday activities.

If your child is a teenager, then coping with their condition may require counseling and other forms of treatment. You may need to look into resources, like those from Lifeline, to help him or her.

ADHD can be a pretty tough ordeal for children. It’s not that they want to be overly hyper, but that’s just a part of who they are. By trying out the tips above, you can help them to manage their behavior.
