How Having a Baby Can Challenge & Grow Your Relationship with Your Spouse

July 22, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Whether you are thinking about trying to get pregnant or are already expecting, you may be wondering how the arrival of a new baby will affect your relationship with your spouse. You are bringing a third person into your family relationship, and you both are tasked with caring for a very dependent being. As you might imagine, this can change your relationship in significant ways. These are some of the more notable ways you may discover your relationship changing after the arrival of a newborn.

How a baby can change your relationship

You Learn to Work Together as a Team

A newborn will rely on you for all of its needs. This includes food and shelter, comfort, love and more. More than that, the baby’s needs persist around the clock unceasingly. You get no breaks, but you still need to tend to your own needs. You may also need to work, take care of household chores and more. Because of these factors, you and your partner will learn to work together as a team. In many cases, you will grow more attentive to each other’s needs, and you both may make sacrifices for the ultimate benefit of others in the family.

Your Focus Shifts

A baby has a way of changing your entire focus in life. While you may have previously been career-driven or adventure-seeking, for example, you may find that your focus and attention turns to the family unit. You both may go out of your way to ensure that your family is protected, provided for and cared for.

Your Love Can Deepen

There is a significant emotional bond that develops and grows between two people who bring a baby into the world together. For example, a new father may see the mother as a strong yet maternal being, and this is a side of her that he has never seen before. Likewise, the mother may see the softer and more emotional side of the father. Through these profound changes, love between the mother and father can strengthen substantially.

You May Face Serious Issues Together

In some cases, the birth of a child can bring stress and heartache. If a child is injured at birth and you are faced with legal issues, for example, you may have to tackle events that you may not have been prepared for. Through this, you may learn to support each other more fully than you previously have.

Each relationship is unique, but these are some of the more common ways a relationship can change when a baby is born. Having a new baby is a life-changing experience for the individual, but it also can help your relationship to strengthen and grow in different ways.
