How to Help Your Children Understand Why Your Family Has to Move Away

March 24, 2017 by Pam Maynard

When it’s time for the family to move because of a new job or because you might not be able to keep paying the current house payment, you need to gently explain to your children why you have to move away. Sometimes, children might be against leaving a school that they enjoy or leaving their friends. Explain to them that they will be able to have friends at the new home who they know and will be able to begin new adventures at a new school if the school is changed.

Explaining Money

This is a time when you can talk to your children about money and how it’s made in the family. You can also teach children about the value of money and what it’s used to pay for, such as a home, utility bills and vehicles. Talk to children about saving money by moving and being able to get more things after the move is complete so that you can enjoy time together.

Outgrowing the Home

If you are expecting to add more children to the family or even an elderly parent who needs someone to provide care, then it is probably a good idea to move to a bigger home. Explain to your children that there will be more space to play and that there will be more people in the family. A moving company, like Wheaton World Wide Moving, can help get all of the items from the current home to the larger home and help set up some of the furnishings, especially if you are already expecting a new baby and can’t do a lot on your own. This is a good time to tell children that they might not have to change schools just because the family is moving to a new home, which can help alleviate the fear that they might have. Of course, that depends on whether or not you’re moving locally.

Drawing Maps

Moving because of a new job can sometimes be hard to explain. One of the easiest ways to get children to see how a move can interact with a new job is to draw a map. Show children where the current home is located and where the new home is located in comparison to the job. This can give them an idea as to how much driving distance is saved and the time that can be spent at home as a family if the commute isn’t as long.

A Family Event

Set aside some time to have friends and family over to the current home so that you can be together before the move. Exchange addresses so that children can write back and forth and visit when possible. It’s important to explain that they can still communicate in a different town, and it can be a way that younger children can work on handwriting skills.

Moving can be scary for children. It’s a time when everything changes from getting a new room to making new friends. If you use a few tools, then you can easily talk to children about the importance and the benefits of moving that they might not think about.
