Spending most of your time watching TV or getting cozy indoors is certainly a pastime everyone can enjoy, but a sedentary lifestyle can also lead to conditions such as obesity and weak bones. Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and families should work to embrace it. What makes activity easier to do and get in the habit of, is when it can be combined with having fun with your family. Instead of driving to the gym occasionally, why not organize outdoor activities together which will not only be fun and adventurous, but also help to get everyone in shape. Here are some of the activities to think about trying on your journey to a healthier lifestyle.
Going for Walks
Once the kids return from school and parents from their day jobs, try going on a walk before having dinner. Make it a little more exciting for younger kids by creating a scavenger hunt of items to find, like leaves, rocks, sticks, or insects. Cross each one off the list as you go. You could even have older kids and adults take pictures of the scenery and judge the best ones once you get back. Think about making your walks service project instead, and bring your neighbors small treats as you go along.
Swimming
It can be nearly impossible to find a good activity to keep your whole family fit during the summer due to the heat. Swimming is one great way to get outdoors despite the heat, and still work out. The aerobic exercise is just what the doctor ordered, and you can swim laps, race, or see who can tread water the longest for a bit of competition.
Play Night Games
One thing kids love to do most is play games. Extend their recess hour at home and join in playing tag, red rover, riding bikes, jumping rope and much more. You can also think about setting up a simple backyard badminton set or basketball hoop for hours of entertainment. It doesn’t have to be complex, just make sure the whole family has a chance to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and play.
Skiing
During winter you don’t have to stay indoors or skip exercising as a family. Skiing is a great sport for exercise and endurance. Take a vacation for a day or two and use it to teach the kids how to ski or snowboard. Lake Tahoe in California is one of the many locations where you can find easy Ski Rental options. But if you are closer to Colorado or Montana, there are plenty of other resorts where you can find ski equipment rental centers and easy slopes for first-timers. Think about cross-country options as well. You can avoid the cost of a resort and still have a fun way to exercise everyone’s muscles out in the cold.
Outdoor activities help you keep fit and are great for teaching kids the benefits of an active lifestyle. All you need is a little creativity, and your family will keep healthy this year.
