Weekend Road Trips can be a relaxing getaway, or a hot mess. There are several steps you can take to make sure your trip goes as smoothly as possible and the effort is minimal. See how easy a weekend road trip with your family can be with our ten tips for a successful weekend road trip below.
- Avoid driving further than four hours (one way.) Spending too much time driving can cause you more stress than necessary. Stay close to home, but far enough away to disconnect in a positive way.
- Don’t over-extend yourself. Instead of planning ten activities for your family in three days, keep it simple and loose. I prefer to schedule a morning activity, long lunch, and I will choose either an afternoon or evening activity (I avoid doing both); AND don’t forget to relax in between.
- Plan one activity that is out of the ordinary. Even if you are visiting a friend or family, plan one activity that will make your trip memorable. Side stop at a spa, go to a themed show, zip-lining, volunteering at an exotic animal rescue… something fun and different to you!
- Have your oil changed a few days/week before your trip.
- Pack your vehicle the night before you leave. If you are leaving Friday after work, pack your car on Thursday evening.
- Don’t bring your dog/cat (other pet) if they don’t travel well. There are many pet sitters who would love to have your furbaby for a visit. These small businesses are usually in-home and provide loving companionship to your pet.
- If possible, request the afternoon off from work on the day you are going to leave. Leave in time to arrive at your destination before dinner.
- Make leaving easier by laying out clothing before you and your family leave for work/school that morning
- Avoid stress. If the restaurant you planned is too noisy, don’t stay. If your hotel room isn’t up to par, politely ask to be moved (smile and be sincere with your request.)
- Don’t wait until the last minute to return home. On Sunday morning, go out for a great breakfast, or one last adventure, and then return home in time to prepare for your upcoming week.
As you can see, taking the extra time to plan your trip, prepare properly, and know your family’s limits can allow your family to enjoy a weekend road trip anytime of year!
