Disney sent me on an all expense paid trip for the Red Carpet Premier of The BFG. All opinions are 100% my own.
The talents of three of the world’s greatest storytellers – Roald Dahl, Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg – unite for the first time to bring Dahl’s beloved classic “The BFG” to life on screen. Directed by Spielberg, Disney’s “The BFG” tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country.
The story starts out in the orphanage where we see Sophie go about her nightly duties- she has insomnia. You can see the sadness and loneliness on her face – even when she tries to be brave and scold the noisy men outside on the street. Then, a curious thing happens- she sees a HUGE hand picking up the garbage cans that the men knocked over. When she sees his GIANT form, she dives back into her bed and hides under the covers. The BFG cannot be seen by this little girl, so he snatches her from her bed- that’s when the journey begins!
One of the things that caught my attention were all the GIANT emotions that run throughout the film!
FEAR!
Sophie is convinced that The BFG is going to eat her for dinner. After much coaxing, The BFG finally convinces Sophie that he isn’t a “cannybully” and that only his brothers do that.
ACCEPTANCE!
The BFG wins Sophie’s heart when she realizes that they are a lot a like. They both are alone and realize that they need each other. They have never been accepted by their peers before.
Humans never even believed that Giants existed. Sophie now knows that this is true! She always knows that not ALL giants are bad.
FRIENDSHIP!
Sophie and The BFG become fast friends when they realize how alike they are. I love the scenes where The BFG gently cares for Sophie and even takes care of her glasses so she can read her books. He knows how important her reading is.
HAPPINESS!
One of my favorite parts of the movie is The BFG’s “Wigglish” sayings. They make Sophie laugh as well as the audience – especially when we figure out just want his words mean!
Sophie assures him that he speaks beautifully! The BFG says that’s the best present anyone has ever given him.
Before you go see The BFG, I recommend reading the GobbleFunk Glossary HERE so your kids can help you decode BFG Wigglish!
AWE and WONDER!
The beautiful dream catching scenes are amazingly magical. Sophie is delighted and in awe of the work that The BFG does. She knows he catches these amazing dreams to give the children good dreams during the night.
(Left to right) Gizzardgulper, Childchewer, Maidmasher, Bloodbottler, Manhugger, Fleshlumpeater, Meatdripper, Butcher Boy, and Bonecruncher surround the BFG in Disney’s THE BFG
COURAGE!
Sophie and The BFG are determined to stop the brothers from eating children. They devise a plan and give each other courage to achieve their goal!
Don’t miss this MAGICAL ending to the heatwarming story of friendship. I can’t spoil the ending- you HAVE to go see The BFG for yourself! I promise you won’t be disappointed!
This movie teaches all of us that children are not to be overlooked! They have important ideas and those ideas can change the world. As adults, we may tend to brush off ideas of children, but that may be a big mistake. If the Queen hadn’t listened to Sophie, the movie would have a horrible ending, I’m sure!
Like Mr. Spielberg said:
“I just, I just want people to understand how important it is to both give and receive hugs. And it doesn’t matter how different the person looks or how tall they are or how short they are or what color they are or what language they speak or what their different beliefs are! We all need to hug each other and we have to hug each other more when we’re so different from each other. “

The talents of three of the world’s greatest storytellers – Roald Dahl, Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg – finally unite to bring Dahl’s beloved classic “The BFG” to life. Directed by Spielberg, Disney’s “The BFG” tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country. The BFG (Mark Rylance), while a giant himself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the BFG prefers Snozzcumber and Frobscottle. Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of the mysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realize that the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming, and, having never met a giant before, has many questions. The BFG brings Sophie to Dream Country where he collects dreams and sends them to children, teaching her all about the magic and mystery of dreams. Having both been on their own in the world up until now, their affection for one another quickly grows, but Sophie’s presence in Giant Country has attracted the unwanted attention of the other giants, who have become increasingly more bothersome. Sophie and the BFG soon depart for London to see the Queen (Penelope Wilton) and warn her of the precarious giant situation, but they must first convince the Queen and her maid, Mary (Rebecca Hall), that giants do indeed exist. Together, they come up with a plan to get rid of the giants once and for all.
