Five Affordable Health Solutions for the Whole Family

April 30, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Medical expenses are rising even for those with insurance, and medical insurance isn’t cheap. Maintain your family’s physical and financial health with these affordable healthcare tips:

Kids eating a healthy meal

Stay Healthy

Preventing illness is the best way to reduce medical costs. A healthy diet including ample amounts of fruits and vegetables will boost your immune system and keep digestive issues at bay. Try a green smoothie for breakfast to increase nutrient consumption, and make meals from real ingredients, rather than choosing processed foods or restaurant meals. You’ll save money on your food bill, too!

Use Benefits

Many employers and insurance companies offer bonus checks or premium reductions if you enroll in an exercise program or take other prevention measures. You may even be able to access discounts on gym memberships or nutrition classes. Don’t skip the free “health check” at your local pharmacy or the flu shots offered at the office.

Shop Around

If you or a family member requires vision correction, costs can add up quickly. You don’t have to buy your glasses from your doctor; you can take the prescription on paper, then watch for specials at vision centers like All About Eyes. These specials can provide significant savings, especially if many members of your family wear glasses.

Try Alternative Providers

It’s easy to overlook traditional medicine, even when there’s not necessarily a need for modern medical care. Consider trying chiropractic care for ailments beyond back pain. Just be sure you’re consulting an actual licensed doctor for any serious ailments—it’s always good to get another opinion, so don’t follow the advice of an herbalist or naturopath without getting that second opinion. You’ll not only save money, but may be empowered to play a greater role in your family’s wellbeing.

Be Safe

Avoid costly emergency care by following basic safety procedures. Wear helmets while riding bikes or ATV’s. Carefully follow safety instructions for power tools and lawn equipment. Affix adhesive traction strips to your bathtub and ensure that toxic cleaners and medicines are kept away from young children. You may have gotten away with an unsafe habit so far, but just one accident can be devastating.

It might seem daunting to look at rising medical prices, but your health is worth the little work it takes to find extra room in your budget. Taking these positive steps will not only keep your wallet happier, they may make you feel healthier, too.
