Personal goals for the New Year can also mean a resolution to have a healthier home. Right now my mother-in-law has set goals for her home to make it healthier for her and everyone who visits. She plans to replace carpeting, stop using harsh cleaning chemicals and now asks guests who smoke to keep it outside. She’s doing all that she can but there are still harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that she is still working on removing – soaps, detergents, perfumes, paints and varnish all linger in the home and create VOCs.
Dr. Ted Myatt, ScD, says “Many household VOCs have known toxicities and can be associated with headaches and irritation of the eye, nose, and throat.” — have you experienced any of these symptoms?
Recently, the maker of Honeywell Air Purifiers teamed up with a team of environmental health scientists to release a list of the top 10 most common American household VOCs along with an online checklist to help families learn how they can lessen these potentially harmful toxins in the home.

Are you doing all you can to have a healthy home in 2016?
Air purifiers, like the new Honeywell QuietClean® Tower Air Purifier are one option for protecting homes as they have carbon pre-filers that help reduce odors and absorb VOCs. This system doesn’t require any assembly and can be used right out of the box! Plug it in and press the touch button controls on the top of the unit to start.
Get cleaner air in minutes with the new Honeywell QuietClean® Tower Air Purifier. The patented 3-step filtration system captures up to 99% of airborne allergens such as dust, pollen, tobacco smoke and pet dander as small as 2 microns1. Dirty air is drawn into the purifier by a powerful, ultra quiet fan where it then passes through a pre-filter trapping larger particles and finally through the high performance filter that captures the microscopic particles. The permanent filters are easily rinsed clean in water, saving money on replacement filters. An optional, replaceable odor and VOC reducing pre-filter is also included giving the user the choice of added cleaning and freshening. An electronic filter clean indicator reminds the user when it is time to clean or replace the filters. The sleek, new design features touch button electronic controls illuminated by blue, dimmable LED’s and an integrated easy-to-carry handle, allowing easy movement to another room.
I had the chance to remove the VOCs in our home with the Honeywell QuietClean® Tower Air Purifier this month, and was impressed with how easy it is to use. It arrived ready to be plugged in and with an instruction booklet (oh, how we have taken paper instructions for granted over the years). Even though it is an easy purifier to use, I still made sure to read the instructions so I knew how to handle the filters in the future. While reading the instructions, I discovered one more thing I love about the QuietClean Tower, the filters are washable!
Permanent, washable filters included with the Honeywell QuietClean® Tower Air Purifier is a BIG (um, glorious) deal to me! I cannot afford to purchase expensive filters every three months like most home filtration units require. There have been many times I have passed on purchasing air purification systems for our home because it would require me to replace filters monthly or quarterly.
All of the filters are washable? Is washing complicated?
Washing the Honeywell QuietClean® Tower Air Purifier filters isn’t complicated, but you need to be sure you are following the manufacture instructions to prevent damage.
Important Note:
I will walk you though how easy it is,
but you should always consult your user manual
before you actually do this yourself.
I washed my filters simply by unplugging my unit and removing the backside cover. It has a clip near the top that I pressed to remove the back (much like removing the battery cover of a television remote). The pre-filter remained attached to this cover. I removed the pre-filter and set the cover/rear grille aside.
My unit came with two pre-filters. The pre-filter that arrived factory installed is a washable pre-filter. As a courtesy, I was provided with a sample Honeywell QuietClean OdorLock Pre-Filter — this filter is not washable and would need to be replaced if I choose to continue using them. As I’ve already told you, washable filters is what I like so I will discard this filter and return the washable pre-filter to my unit.
To wash the permanent pre-filter, gently run it under warm
water and allow to completely dry before using again. — Easy.
When I pulled the IFD filters out to wash them, I became confused because they remain inside the unit firmly. I didn’t have to use major force to remove them, but I thought I might have misunderstood the directions and removed the wrong pieces. (Tip: Read, and re-read the directions before you begin, just so you don’t have a panic moment too.)
After my panic wore off, washing my IFD filters was really easy. Since I attempted to wash them so soon after my system arrived, all I needed to do was vacuum each side with my vacuum hose and hose attachment (not included). Next time I will vacuum the filters, soak them in soapy water, rinse well, and allow them to completely dry before I use them again.
All of these simple steps are much easier than purchasing new filters from the store.
Mom’s Thoughts:
I have never encountered a home air purifier that is as easy to use and as inexpensive to maintain than the Honeywell QuietClean® Tower Air Purifier. I know the system is working, I can see it osculating, and I can feel the fresh purified air that comes out. This system has resolved every issue I have ever had with home air purifier systems.
