How to Protect Your Kids from the Flu this Season

School is back in session and that can only mean one thing: flu season. Schools can be a veritable germ factory, and your kids will need a little extra help staying well and avoiding the flu. Aside from getting them their annual flu shot, there are other ways in which you can help them avoid getting ill.

Avoid Sugar

Sugar, aside from putting your child at risk for obesity, cavities and behavioral problems, can also weaken their immune system. Sugary foods interfere with their body’s ability to absorb vitamin C and takes up room in their diet that should be full of nutrient-dense foods. While the occasional cookie isn’t a terrible thing, daily consumption of treats or soda places your child at a higher risk for getting sick. Try to satiate a sweet-tooth with healthful treats, such as fruits or all-natural juices.

Get to Know the Good Bacteria

Probiotics are bacteria that are beneficial for the human body. Found in foods like yogurt and other fermented foods like sauerkraut or kefir, these friendly microbes actually support your child’s immune system. If incorporating probiotic foods into a picky eater’s diet seems too difficult, there are many supplements available to increase your child’s probiotic consumption.

Focus on More Than Hand Washing

You’ve probably drilled it into your children’s minds to wash their hands regularly. However, you could be missing a big part of the germ picture. A nurse with an online Master’s of Nursing degree recommends that you pay attention to hidden germ harbors. These include warm, moist places that are a haven for germ growth, such as your clothes washer or dishwasher. Also be mindful to sanitize door handles, light switches, toys and remote controls.

Get a Daily Dose of Vitamin D

Vitamin D plays a vital role in your child’s well-being, and the easiest way to maintain healthful levels of this vitamin is to get 15-30 minutes of sun exposure per day. Our bodies naturally synthesize Vitamin D from the sun, but kids are spending increasing amounts of time indoors. While you can purchase Vitamin D supplements, research has shown that artificial Vitamin D is not easily absorbed. Focus on getting your child outdoors, even for a small amount of time per day.

Taking just a few easy steps can help to keep your child’s immune system strong. Fewer sick days mean higher grades and better school performance. Don’t fear the flu, fight it off with good nutrition and proper hygiene!
