Want Mr. Turkey to hang on your door for the Fall? He’s super easy to make with minimal supplies.
To make Mr. Turkey, you will need:
- 3 colors of tulle: Red, Yellow and Orange
- Brown ribbon (5/8″ is what I used)
- a wreath form (pre-made or you can make yourself…see below)
- 2 styrofoam balls ( 2″ balls)
- 1 styrofoam cone (3″ of the pointy end)
- yellow marker or paint (marker is less mess)
- glue gun and glue sticks
- 2 google eyes or a black marker (whichever you’d like to use)
- 1 piece of red foam sheet
To make Mr. Turkey, I first need a wreath form. I don’t buy the expensive ones in the store. They are overpriced and I figure I can get more for my money if I make them myself out of the insulation foam at my local hardware store. So I go and get the grey 1” round pipe insulation foam and cut it to the size I want. I then Duck Tape it (or since I love Gorilla Tape, I use it) to make it stay in place. It works just as well as the expensive foam wreath forms and you’re only spending about $1.00.
You will need to use three different colors of tulle. That does require purchasing three rolls, however, you will have TONS left. However, you will have plenty left for the next project. That is a great thing!
I started out with Mr. Turkey by taking the wreath form and wrapping the brown ribbon around the bottom of it. I purchased a roll of 5 feet brown ribbon, and wrapped it around the bottom of the wreath approximately a foot, (hot glue the ends to hold). The ribbon that I used is 5/8” wide, but you can use any ribbon or yarn that you like. Twine would also work.
Jake and I then started cutting the tulle. This is task that takes the longest. Take the three colors of tulle and cut each piece approximately 1 foot long. You will need 25 pieces of each color. By tying (double knotting) the tulle in sequence from the brown ribbon to the brown ribbon, you will have a fluffy turkey.
To make Mr. Turkey’s eyes, take the large styrofoam balls and hot glue the google eyes in the center of each ball, then hot glue each ball to each other. Once the glue cools, glue the “eyes” to the center of the brown ribbon.
Take the styrofoam cone and cut it to 3”. Color it with the yellow marker. This will make it into a beak. Take the read foam sheet and make a snood (the red thing on the turkey’s nose, yes you learns something new everyday). The way I made it uniform was I made my squiggle line and folded my foam over and cut it once…it made it even when I was finished (See photo). Hot Glue to yellow cone, and then hot glue to brown ribbon.
Finishing touch? Take a little piece of the ribbon and loop trough the back of the tulle for a hanger. Put Mr. Turkey on your door and let your visitors and neighbors enjoy!
