5 Completely Free Weekend Activities Your Kids Will Love

September 19, 2015 by Pam Maynard

Activities for children can really put a dent in your budget. If you’re trying to save money, you’ll be happy to know that there are a lot of weekend activities your kids will love that won’t break the bank. In fact, here are five free activities to check out.

Young Family Relaxing Inside Tent On Camping Holiday

Give the Kids Cooking Lessons

This is an activity that not only allows you to bond, but also teaches some valuable life skills. You have to cook anyway, and weekend dinners are typically less chaotic than those during the busy work- and school-week, so this is the perfect time to teach your kids how to fire up the grill, make soup or bake a delectable dessert.

Relive Your Youth

What kinds of things did you enjoy doing as a child? Did you play kick-the-can or spend time chasing fireflies with a jar? Brainstorm about how you spent your childhood weekends, and introduce your children to some of these forgotten pleasures. Fly a kite, make s’mores, or play flashlight tag after dark!

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Every season of the year offers opportunities to get out and enjoy nature. Camping is a great way for the frugal family to get away for the weekend. Putting up your own tent will save you plenty of money on accommodations and, with a Gander Mountain coupon, you can save even more on camping supplies. Spending the weekend camping will also give your family plenty of time to reconnect around the campfire after a long week apart.

Attend Free Events in Your Town

Many towns offer free events. All you need to do is look for them! There might be a concert on the town green or an activity at the community center. Sometimes, churches and other organizations put on special free events on various holidays or to celebrate the different seasons. Read the newspaper to find them, or check the flyers that may come home from school with your child.

Have a Movie or Game Night

Do the kids love staying up late? While it’s difficult to do this when you have to work or get them off to school the next morning, a Friday or Saturday night is the perfect time to set up pillows and blankets in the living room and have some late-night fun. Pop some popcorn, heat up some hot chocolate, and enjoy a movie or play a favorite game.

Finding activities that won’t cost any money just takes a bit of thinking and planning ahead. Don’t be afraid to make suggestions to your kids; you might be surprised at how excited they are just to spend time with you after a busy week.
