Teach kids about kindness toward animals with JJ The American Street Dog and JJ Goes to Puppy Class.
About the author Diane Rose-Solomon:
It’s my passion to teach kids kindness–especially kindness to animals. All moms can relate to teaching their children to be kind. I wrote JJ The American Street Dog a few years ago to expose kids to unconditional love and compassion, and I’m thrilled by the response and awards the book has received. Next came the sequel JJ Goes to Puppy Class, teaching patience, which has also received exclusively positive reviews. So exciting!
About JJ the American Street Dog:
Maya has wanted a dog for as long as she can remember. Just when her parents decide to buy her one, her Uncle Jerry finds a homeless puppy that he can’t keep. Although Mom is skeptical about keeping a dog from the street, she agrees to take in the pup and they name him JJ. Before long, JJ warms his way into their hearts, and Maya and her family learn about homeless animals and how they can be a part of the solution to end pet over-population.
About JJ Goes to Puppy Class:
Maya just adopted her puppy JJ and couldn’t be more excited! JJ is excited too and you know what that means… he’s digging holes in the garden, jumping up on furniture, having an occasional accident in the house and many more puppy-like things! Maya’s mom signs the whole family up for puppy-training class, where they will have fun learning how to keep JJ and those around him happy and safe. Plus the bonding time spent together is priceless!
You can find both books on Amazon- Puppy Class and American Street Dog.
My Review:
JJ the American Street Dog is a heartwarming story of how a girl’s dream of owning a dog comes true. Maya wants a puppy so bad, she dreams about them at night. She has a cat, but cats are just NOT dogs. Then she learns that her uncle found a puppy on a soccer field without tags, without an owner, without any love! Her uncle helps them try to find the owner, but no one claims this cute, furry puppy. They name him JJ after her uncle’s name.
I was wondering why JJ is referred to as The American Street Dog- the author says when people would ask what kind of dog JJ was, she would say an American Street Dog! I love that, so much nicer than saying a mutt!
The whole book is a great story of how to introduce a shelter dog into your home. Maya learns how to deal with a Shelter dog and how to care for any dog. One of the most important things to remember is that dogs need LOVE! And, they will love you back, UNCONDITIONALLY!
My son wants his “own” dog now. We do have a Border Collie and German Shepherd, but he wants to rescue his own dog from a shelter. This book was great inspiration for him and for me.
JJ Goes to Puppy Class
The first thing I LOVED about JJ Goes to Puppy Class is how Maya’s mom made everything relate to her own experiences growing up. Children learn by doing and since she already did many of thing she was trying to teach JJ, it just made sense.
JJ is a typical puppy and he gets into anything and everything he can find. When Maya finds him doing bad things, her parents teach her how to correct him with positive reinforcement. Because her mom referenced things that Maya learned to do from her parents, Maya was able to see why JJ did what he did and how it made sense to show him the RIGHT way.
It is NEVER right to correct a dog with physical abuse. I love how JJ Goes to Puppy Class is all about realistic expectations. Puppies are not perfect. They don’t come potty trained. They have to learn right from wrong, just like us. When we make mistakes, we don’t get kicked or hit with a broom. We need to treat our pets like they are a part of our family.
I love how the author includes more information about Shelter Dogs, puppy training and more. These resources are invaluable and are great for parents and children alike. These pages can turn the fiction story about JJ into a reality! Be sure to check them out when you buy your OWN books!
I hope you enjoy JJ’s book as much as we did! I highly recommend these fun books for any family looking to get a new furry sibling! You won’t be disapointed!
