Winter is Coming: 5 Indoor Activities Your Child Will Love

October 23, 2013 by Pam Maynard

Before you know it, your children will be going trick-or-treating, and you’ll be purchasing Christmas presents. With the cool temperatures setting in, you’re probably excited for some of what is coming, but you may also be a little worried. After all, how are you going to entertain the kids?

Winter Is Coming - 5 Indoor Actives Your Child Will Love

Indoor Physical Activity

Instead of keeping the kids in the house all winter, look into some activities that can get them out and help them stay active.  This can be difficult in places with little public space and colder winters.  Some parents have turned to activities like swimming lessons for kids in NYC, or tumbling for children in Detroit to encourage physical activity while avoiding the cold.

Create Scrapbooks

You may have more time to engage in some arts and crafts, so use this to your advantage. Help your kids work on scrapbooks or photo books about vacations that you went on in the summer or put together an album of pictures from the holidays. Encouraging  your child’s artistic side will help them to develop talents and hobbies and free up some time for you as well.

Holiday Movies

You may not be thrilled with the idea of your kid sitting in front of the television, but most things in moderation can be okay. Watching some classic holiday movies could actually be a fun way to spend time with your child. Heat up some hot chocolate and eat Christmas cookies while enjoying movies you both love.

Scavenger Hunt

Kids often love doing something that it is a little bit out of the ordinary, and that’s exactly what they’ll get when you set up a scavenger hunt in your house. You may wish to invite their friends over and to divide them up into teams, and then you can really have a lot of fun. Put together some prizes for the winners of the hunt.

Family Time

Even if you don’t realize it, your kids probably crave more time with the family. Set aside a specific day and time each week where the entire family is going to gather together to work on spending time together. You might play games, read books or participate in family activities like swimming. This cold season may be the perfect time for your family to grow closer as you spend time together.

The winter does not have to be a time when your family feels sad or lonely. Instead, you can enjoy the season by bringing some of these cheerful and fun activities into your home.
