Do you love a good Lasagna that tastes like homemade?
We were very excited to try 3 types of Lasagna. I hope our Lasagna Taste Test makes your shopping choices easier.
The facts about 3 types of Lasagna:
Marie Callender’s: Listed as a delicious 280 calories. First ingredient is tomato puree then lasagna noodles with ingredients I can’t pronounce, then ricotta cheese.
Stouffer’s: Listed as No Preservatives: Lasagna with meat and sauce. The first ingredient is tomato puree, then lasagna noodle, water, beef, then cheeses and some seasoning, and things i can’t pronounce.
Michael Angelo’s: Absolutely no preservatives! They make small batches from scratch. The first ingredient is tomatoes, (no canned tomato puree here), next is pasta then ricotta cheese. There aren’t any ingredients that I can’t pronounce!
Marie Callender’s is the top left, Stouffers is the bottom left, Michael Angelo’s is the one on the right
Upon opening all 3 lasagnas, I discovered that Marie Callender’s was a mess- cheese only on one side, noodles all crooked. Stouffer’s looked presentable- we always love Stouffer’s. Michael Angelo’s looked like homemade lasagna before I even put it in the oven. After I baked all 3 as the package suggested, my husband, son and I sat down to try a piece of each. I marked each one so we would know which was which.
Here are our Lasagna Taste Test findings:
Here are my husband’s opinions:
Marie Callender’s:
My husband said the noodles are not done enough for his taste. Speaking of taste, the first ingredient he could taste was the noodles. The sauce was watery and had an off flavor, it wasn’t savory or sweet. He could taste some very definite off flavors. He could not taste any herbs or spices. His overall impression, “I was very disappointed in Marie Callender’s lasagna. They have such a great reputation with their pot pies.”
Stouffer’s:
The noodles were too squishy, way overdone. The first taste was cheesy tomato sauce, almost like spaghettio’s. The sauce was sweet but not very flavorful. The whole thing tasted of artificial cheese. He couldn’t really taste any herbs or spices. It was slightly better than Marie Callender’s.
Michael Angelo’s:
The texture was perfect- the noodles were perfectly cooked. The first ingredient he could taste was meet and then cheese. The sauce was savory not watery at all. There were no off flavors, only herbs and spices that were very tasty. He said “This lasagna is better than my wife’s homemade. It tastes like something my Italian Stepfather would make.”

My son’s Lasagna opinions:
He agreed with my husband on most points but he thought the first ingredient he could taste in Michael Angelo’s lasagna was cheese and he thought the sauce was sweet. He like Michael Angelo’s the best, then Stouffer’s, then Marie Callender’s. He said Michael Angelo’s lasagna was the best, so cheesy and yummy and he said: “I never used to like lasagna!”

My Lasagna opinion:
Marie Callender’s: The noodles were not quite cooked enough. It did have a bizarre chemical flavor to it. It tasted like noodles with some sauce without any cheese or meat. I was very disappointed. I expected it to be so much better.
Stouffer’s: The whole texture of this lasagna was squishy! there were no distinct layers, just little pieces all piled up together. The first ingredient I noticed was a cheesy tomato sauce and an artificial cheese taste. Again, we used to think Stouffer’s was our favorite. Not anymore.
Micheal Angelo’s: Right from the beginning, Michael Angelo’s lasagna looked just like mom used to make. It had distinct layers of noodles, cheese, noodles, meat. The noodles were actual solid lasagna noodles, not little squishy pieces. The first ingredient I could taste was fresh cheese. The sauce was sweet and savory and had delicious herbs and spices. I’m hooked!
This taste test really opened my eyes to the difference fresh ingredients make in frozen foods. I will never look at Stouffer’s or Marie Callender’s the same again!
