4 Things to Remember When Choosing Protein Shakes

 

After your bariatric surgery, you will not be able to get your protein requirement from your food sources only. Your body loses its ability to absorb protein from food and also your intake of food also reduces to a great extent. This is when you can start having protein shakes to keep up the balance. Here are the five important things that you should keep in mind while choosing a protein shake:

1. Variety Of Proteins Available In Shakes

Protein shakes differ in their source of proteins. There are shakes which contain animal proteins like whey and egg proteins. There are plant proteins as well. These include soy, rice, hempseed and pea proteins. No matter which source of protein you may choose for your shakes, Bariatrics is one name doctors swear by, to make up for your body’s protein needs.

2. Which Protein Should You Consume After The Surgery

It is best if you start with soy protein and then move on to egg and plant proteins. You will get most proteins from soy, egg and whey protein. These also contain fewer amounts of calories. If you are lactose intolerant, avoid proteins with lactose. You must always check the label to see whether the product you are consuming is lactose free. After your gastric bypass surgery, you should keep your calorie intake from protein shakes within 150-250.

3.      How Much Protein Will You Be Able To Consume

The amount of protein you get from protein shakes depends on the brand. Check the label to see how much protein is there in each serving and the amount of each serving. You must always choose a product that gives you at least 15 grams of proteins per serving.

Women require 50-60 grams of proteins daily and men require 70-80 grams. If your protein shakes gives you 15 grams of protein per serving then you can get almost 30 grams of proteins from two glasses of the shake.

If you mix this powder with other ingredients like milk and fruits, you can consume almost 45 grams of proteins daily from these shakes. You can also mix it with the best pea protein powder if you love vegan products which are healthy for your body

4.      Sugar And Fat Contain Should Be Low In The Protein Shake

It is important that you keep a check on the amount of sugar and fast present in your protein shake. You must not consume more than 15 grams of sugar. It is better to buy unflavored and unsweetened protein shakes and add artificial sugar. You must consume less fat as that causes dumping syndrome. This is not good for your body and cause problems.

Protein shakes are a good way to consume proteins after the surgery. Immediately after the surgery, it becomes difficult to consume proteins from food source and the liquid protein is the best way to consume your daily dose of protein, as 1 serving can help you absorb 15 grams of valuable protein.
