To Bug Bomb, or not to Bug Bomb: 4 Pest Control Tips for New Homeowners

Ask before You Buy

When you’re looking for a new home, you need to look as thoroughly over the history of the house as possible. Some things might stand out to you more prominently, such as structural damages. However, you should definitely ask about the history of the home, including infestations. Consult with the current owners about any infestations they’ve experienced. If they seem reluctant to share any information, you might have to press them a little bit further.

You can also maybe call around to local pest control professionals and see if they have any experience working in that neighborhood. You don’t want to buy a house that is teeming with potential for infestation.

Be Careful about What You Bring in

Insects and other pests might come into your home uninvited, but sometimes you might be unwillingly inviting them in. One of the biggest ways to do this is by bringing in items that are unknowingly infested. Bedbugs are one of the biggest threats in terms of pest problems, and they typically come in through people unwillingly transporting them into their home.

For instance, if you stay at a hotel that is infested with bedbugs, they could hitch a ride onto your luggage and into your home, where they could lay further eggs and wreak havoc. When staying at a hotel, you should thoroughly inspect for bedbugs in drawers and mattresses and keep your luggage off of the floor so they can’t get onto it. You should also avoid taking in furniture off the street and immediately wash any used clothing you purchase.

Keep Your Home in Good Condition

Insects like ants and flies are drawn to an unkempt home, particularly one that’s full of food crumbs around. In order to keep insects at bay, you want to keep your home as clear as possible. Bedbugs, for instance, are very drawn to clutter.

Termites are another pest that is drawn to an unkempt home. If you have moisture in your home or keep things like lumber too close to your house, you could be drawing in termites, who can do significant damage to the structure of your home. Having your home in the best condition possible has numerous benefits, from being more aesthetically pleasing to creating a more relaxing environment for keeping pests out of your home.

By following these tips you have a much easier time than you would if you tried to tackle it on your own. Whatever you do remember that any solution is easier when you tackle it earlier rather than later. Don’t delay, and you’ll find yourself bug-free in no time.
