Remodeling a House? 5 Keys to Surviving the Wait

November 26, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Renovating a home is a major job, and it’s one that can bring on an emotional roller-coaster. Feelings can move quickly from the euphoria of finally achieving that dream house, to the horrifying lows of dealing with a non-functioning kitchen.

Yes, a home renovation project can cause major stress, especially if the kitchen and bathroom are unusable for any period of time. How can this kind of project be endured, with sanity intact? Here are a few tips for coming thorough a home remodel with your emotional state intact.

Remodeling a House? 5 Keys to Surviving the Wait

Find a Temporary Living Space

Yes, living in another place during a remodel can be expensive, but there are ways to do this without breaking a budget. Plan in advance to find a place to live for at least the most difficult parts of the remodel. If the whole family moves out for an extended period of time, line up a reputable moving company like Wheaton World Wide Moving to handle the move efficiently.

Create an Alternate Kitchen Space

The kitchen is the other key area of the home that’s hard to live without. Since washing up can be taken care of in a bathroom or utility room sink, it may be wise to set up a temporary “alternate kitchen” space. Prepare by setting up an efficient wash tub with drying racks, soap and towels, and have that ready to go when the main kitchen is unusable.

Prepare Your Home to Avoid Damage

A remodeling job can make a home dusty and dirty in a hurry. Prepare in advance by putting paint cloths and plastic over furniture, to protect it. Also get a few face masks in case there are days when the dust in the house gets to be a nuisance.

Practice Plenty of Self Care

There’s no doubt that having a family dislocated during a remodel is a hugely stressful experience. Let yourself take some time to just vent and relax as the project moves along. Book a day at a spa to unwind, and go out to dinner once in a while to relax and tell a few funny stories about how it’s all going.

Know It Will Be Finished Soon

The good news is, once the remodel is finished, you’ll have a beautiful home to enjoy, and plenty of comedic stories to share about your remodeling experience. Living in a small rental with your big family can seem frustrating at first, but you’ll likely have good memories in years to come.
