3 Ways You Can Change Your Home to Save Money on Energy Bills

November 26, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Your energy bill is likely one of your largest recurring bills each month. While you can’t erase that expense entirely, there are several ways you can decrease your overall energy expense. These three strategies will reduce your energy use or otherwise help you save money on energy bills.

3 Ways You Can Change Your Home to Save Money on Energy Bills

Switch Energy Sources

In many cases, propane is less expensive than traditional energy sources. Make sure you evaluate local providers like Jefferson Propane and look into how using propane throughout your home can significantly reduce the amount that you’re spending to supply energy throughout your home each month. Propane is also recommended because it is a clean burning fuel. If you’re looking to simply change your primary energy source, you might consider solar panels. Solar panels can be integrated into most homes and can save enough money to pay for themselves.

Reduce Phantom Power Drain

Phantom power is power that is drained by devices that aren’t currently in use. Your TV, gaming devices, and even your coffee maker can all be serious offenders. Then there’s your computer: do you leave it turned on when you aren’t actually using it? Does it hibernate or go to sleep, or is it draining full operational power throughout the entire day? Simply setting up power strips and unplugging them or turning them off when these items aren’t in use throughout your home can save a substantial amount on your energy bill across the course of the year.

3 Ways You Can Change Your Home to Save Money on Energy Bills

Install a Smart Thermostat

Heating and cooling your home is likely one of the primary drains on your energy bill. While you want to be comfortable in your home, the settings on your thermostat can have a substantial impact on your energy bill. Installing a smart thermostat can help reduce your energy usage while keeping your home temperature at a comfortable level any time you’re actually at home. Set your thermostat to move the temperature to your preferred level shortly before you’re supposed to be at home during the day, but reduce your home temperature during the winter and raise it during the summer when you’re not going to be at home. You can also let the temperature drop at home during the winter when you’re going to be in bed and have it raise slowly before you get up in the morning.

Keeping your energy bill in check is an ongoing challenge. By using these strategies, however, you can watch your energy bill transform. Whether you’re ready to conduct an energy audit to help reduce your overall energy use or you simply want to make a few changes, these simple strategies will make it easier to handle your energy consumption.
