If the chill in the air is any indication, Winter is almost here! Winter is a fun time of year and although I am not a fan of snow, it is pretty and the kids love it! The part of Winter I always dread is the colds and coughs that seem to come with it. While we can’t always avoid illness, we don’t have to just sit and wait on it either. We can be proactive and take steps to help build our immune systems and fight back. Take a look at these 7 Tips to Stay Healthy this Winter and guard against colds and flu.
7 Tips to Stay Healthy This Winter
1. Wash Your Hands Frequently
You have heard it all your life, right? However, frequent hand washing is the most important thing you can do to avoid picking up germs that can cause illness. You would be amazed at the many germs you pick up throughout the day. The nasty germ bugs reside on your hands and from there are spread around. It is amazing how often we touch our eyes, nose, mouth, etc throughout the day but it is the perfect opportunity for the germs to enter our system! You can also spread germs around to family members and others simply by touching everyday ordinary things. Needless to say, it is very important to practice frequent hand washing!
2. Stay Hydrated
You may associate getting dehydrated with a Summertime problem. However, the temperature has little to do with it. Your body is constantly losing fluid but we are less aware of it in the Winter months. So, continue to drink plenty of water.
Besides becoming dehydrated on the inside of our bodies, the hot air of the heating system can dry your skin out too! A humidifier is a great choice to help put moisture back into the air and protect your skin and respiratory system
3. Supplements
Vitamin supplements can play an important role in staying healthy and building our immune system. Vitamin C is great for fighting cold and flu symptoms. We also do not get as much sun in the Winter months as we do during the Summer which can cause us to not get enough Vitamin D. So, a Vitamin D supplement can be helpful. A daily multivitamin added to your regimen will help supplement your diet and keep your immune system strong.
4. A Wholesome Diet
Your diet plays an important role in fighting cold and flu symptoms. You need to eat plenty of fruits and veggies. Already feeling under the weather? Choose foods with properties that will help in fighting these symptoms such as blueberries, cranberries, and bananas. Blueberries contain natural enzymes that mimic aspirin, cranberries can help keep bacteria from sticking to the cell linings in your bladder and urinary tract, and bananas contain enzymes that naturally act as an anti-diarrheal.
Honey is another food that you cannot be without as it provides natural enzymes to fight sickness! Honey is a go-to for sweetening hot tea for sipping to soothe a sore throat and providing relief from coughing.
5. Fresh Air
Staying cooped up inside can not only give you cabin-fever, but it can actually make you sick! The closed windows, the heat blasting, and you are constantly breathing the same air. If you already have sick, sniffling family members we don’t have to tell what is going to happen, right? Dress warmly and then get outside and take in some fresh air and feel the sunshine! You will be amazed at how much better you feel!
6. Exercise
Don’t forget to exercise! Just because it is Winter doesn’t mean you can ignore this important step! You may not can jog around the block because of snow and ice, but you can exercise at home or go to a gym. Better yet, if you are up to it, you can talk a walk in the Winter air. Again, dress warmly and take a walk around the block. This gives you a little exercise and some fresh air.
7. Stop Cold and Flu in Its Tracks
