5 Tips for Installing a Laundry Chute in Your Home

November 5, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Lugging around baskets of laundry down to the basement can be tedious, especially if you have a large family. For many, a laundry chute is the perfect answer to the problem of navigating down staircases while carrying piles of clothing once the hampers get too full. As with any DIY project, installing a laundry chute in your home can seem daunting, but with a little preparation it’s actually a fairly straightforward project.

5 Tips for Installing a Laundry Chute in Your Home

Don’t Skimp on Materials

There’s nothing worse than getting half way through a project, only to realize you’re about to run short on materials. To avoid pointless interruptions and needless setbacks, stock up on extra supplies before you begin your installation. Have plenty of duct tape, sandpaper, primer, paint, drywall tape, and other basic items that you’ll be using throughout the course of the project, since it’s easy to run out, especially if you are new to DIY projects. Likewise, having extra screws, metal from a sheet fabrication supplier like Degree C Pty Ltd, and other hardware can act as insurance in case you make a mistake along the way.

Tool of the Trade

All the material in the world won’t do you any good if you don’t have the necessary tools for the job. Whether you buy your own equipment or simply rent them from a hardware store, having the right tools on-hand will save you frustration in the long-run. To properly install a laundry chute you’ll need a basic drill set, reciprocating and drywall saws, a screwdriver set, a tape measure, tin snips, and a comfortable utility knife.

Consult Local Laws

As with any project to your property, there may be local laws that can limit or even prohibit the installation of a laundry chute. Before you invest in the necessary tools and materials, determine if any community guidelines apply to your project. Laws governing the installation of a laundry chute mostly relate to their potential impact on fire safety, though the alleged risks are largely a misnomer. That said, it’s best to stay on the right side of the law, so consult your housing board or a property inspector for more information.

The Perfect Spot

There’s plenty of obstacles that can get in the way of installing a laundry chute, so choosing the right spot is key. Wires, plumbing, and other featured installed behind walls can make the project difficult or impossible, so consider these factors carefully. Hallways generally make the best place to install a chute, especially if their walls run parallel to the underlying floor joists.

Complimentary Upgrades

If you’re going through the trouble of adding a laundry chute, it’s the perfect time to update your laundry room as well. A chute is all about convenience, so select a few other time and labor saving additions to further simplify doing laundry. An ironing board mounted into a cabinet, easy to mop tile or vinyl floors, or even a new sink in your laundry room can make the space much more versatile and easier to maintain.

It’s All in the Planning

Taking on a DYI project can be exciting, but don’t let your anticipation and eagerness get in the way of careful planning. Make sure you have the right tools and don’t be afraid to buy more supplies than you think you’ll need. Even if you make a few mistakes along the way, with careful planning your home will have the convenience of a self-installed laundry chute in no time.
