How to Find the Perfect Dentist for Your Family

October 17, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Depending on where you live, you may have anywhere from a handful of dentists to dozens of them from which to choose. You may have headed to one or two offices yourself for a cleaning or dragged your children to the nearest office for a fluoride treatment and discovered that the dentist and his staff there did not really seem to click with you or the rest of your family. Here are five great tips that will have you, your spouse and your children really smiling when you leave the dentist’s office next time.

How to Find the Perfect Dentist for Your Family

An Experienced Dentist

The dentist you ultimately choose should have plenty of experience. Even if he or she is newly graduated from school, there should be a record of plenty of training hours along with a license from the state dental board. In fact, check with the dental board to see if any claims have been filed against the dentist. The dentist should also have a great reputation, which should be noted by real client reviews that can be found online. Finally, ask the dentist whether he or she completes continuing education modules regularly.

Works with Children

The dentist you choose should also meet your family’s needs. This could be different based on the ages of your children. For example, if you have preschoolers and elementary-age children, the dentist should be able to do fluoride treatments and should have rooms specifically set apart for kids with plenty to keep them busy. If you have teenagers, you may need a dentist that provides orthodontic care. If you or your children are terribly frightened of dental appointments, you may want to choose a candidate that provides anesthesia for comfort.

Highly Recommended

You will want to ask friends and family for recommendations, especially if you are moving to a new area. If you have friends who trust dentists in Bryant, Arkansas and whose children love that particular dentist, they could be the right one for you. You may also want to ask your old dentist for a recommendation if moving or check online for ratings and reviews of local dentists. These reviews can give you a great idea of the dentist’s personality and track record.

Good Rapport

After you narrow down your choices, you will definitely want to request a meeting with the dentist before taking your children in for their first examinations. You should feel as if you instantly click with the dentist, and you should feel comfortable enough to share concerns or questions with him or her. You should feel as if the dentist will be kind to you and your children while also being able to make good recommendations for oral care. A dentist who cares for your children should be gentle, calming and patient.

Family Dental: How to Find a Good, Quality Dentist for the Family

The Nitty Gritty

Of course, you must make a few other basic decisions before absolutely deciding that this is the dentist for you. If you have dental insurance, call up the provider to find out if they accept your insurance. Find out how far the office is from your home, if they offer hours that work with your work or school schedule and if the office provides online communication. You will also want to ask them about appointment policies, such as charges for missed or late appointments and fees for certain treatments. Finally, meet the office staff who will be working closely with the dentist to determine if you also feel comfortable with them.

Of course, you must consider many things when deciding on a dentist. You must look into your finances, your insurance and distance that you are willing to travel. For example, you may be willing to travel quite far if you have a dentist that you absolutely love, but if time is a problem for you, you may need a dentist who practices much closer to your home. Take time to meet dentists, tour their offices and ask them questions before you settle on one. Remember that just because a friend or family member likes a dentist, you may not like that same one.
