3 Unexpected Plumbing Problems That Could Be Your Clogged Drain Culprit

September 30, 2017 by Pam Maynard

While clogged drains are a relatively common occurrence, nobody wants to deal with them. When a clog does occur, it’s important to know some of the likely causes of the clog, including unexpected and thus frequently overlooked sources. Like any plumbing problem, if a clog does occur, it should be fixed as soon as it’s discovered to avoid more serious or permanent damage to your plumbing system. Here are three unexpected sources that may be causing your clogged drain:

3 Unexpected Plumbing Problems That Could Be Your Clogged Drain Culprit

Tree Roots

Surprisingly, tree roots are one of the most common causes of clogged drainage pipes. Roots from trees on your property will sometimes grow into cracks or crevasses in your pipes in search of water, which can both widen existing cracks as well as block the flow of water thanks to the encroaching roots. Older pipe systems are most vulnerable to this, particularly those made of concrete or clay, as they are more susceptible to developing cracks or crevasses that can allow for tree roots to move into the pipes.

Soap Buildup

Another unexpected source of clogged drains, soap buildup is usually a problem in shower or laundry drains, as these are more frequently exposed to soapy water. Soap that is carried down the drain accumulates on the inside of your drainage pipes over time, which can eventually lead to clogging. One way to avoid this is to hire professionals, such Drainman The, to boost the water pressure of your showers and sinks. This can help particles flow through the pipes more smoothly–and while they’re there, you can have them check your drains for clogs as well.

Grease and Oil Buildup

Most homeowners don’t realize that fatty or greasy substances such as grease and cooking oil can lead to a clogged drain. As these substances are washed down the drain, they can cool and stick to the inside of your pipes just as soap particles can, although the buildup occurs much faster with grease or oil. This problem is common in kitchen sinks, as they commonly have food particles washed down them. Washing food down your kitchen sink is ill-advised in general, but in particular, avoid tossing fatty substances down the drain, even liquids such as vegetable oil.

These are just three common and unexpected causes of clogged drains. If you’ve noticed problems with your plumbing and suspect a clog, call a professional to check it out and fix the problem. Leaving clogs unattended can lead to damage to your pipes over time, so it’s important to act quickly when a clog is discovered. A clogged drain is always going to be annoying, but by keeping in mind some often-overlooked causing of clogs, you can minimize the risk to your plumbing system.
