Planning for Parenthood: 4 Things Every New Parent Should Know

September 26, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Millions of babies are welcomed into this country every year, so there are a number of new mommies and daddies out there. You are not alone in feeling a little overwhelmed about this change in your life. The following are four essential things all parents should know, just in case.

Planning for Parenthood: 4 Things Every New Parent Should Know

Baby Allergies

One thing you need to do is learn the signs that babies show when they are having an allergic reaction. You want to pay attention to their skin. Sometimes, babies have rashes or their skin gets a little red. You might also want to watch out for excessive coughing or sneezing. Any of these symptoms could be associated with allergies.

Baby Changes

Many new parents think that their babies are going to look a certain way or act a certain way when they come home, which is usually not the case. For one, babies might have a puffy-face for a few weeks after being born. Babies also do not smile nor do they coo for about 6 weeks. Try to learn about developmental milestones so that you have an idea of how your baby is developing.

Be Prepared

You do not want to imagine the worse, but it is important that new parents are prepared to deal with the worst things that could happen. For example, while uncommon, birth injuries such as shoulder dystocia are a potential risk of every birth. You should read up on some of the more common birth injuries and familiarize yourself with how to care for a baby that suffers an injury during birth.

Have a Wake-Sleep Plan

Your baby may be a bit of a handful, especially during the first three months. Babies need to eat every two to three hours. This erratic way of living does not stop because babies also do not sleep too long. Most babies will not be able to sleep for a stretch of six to eight hours until they are about 3 months old. This means you are going to be waking up at strange hours. It might be a good idea to plan out nap times with your partner to avoid frustration.

These tips should help make you feel a little more prepared to deal with your new role as a parent. There is a lot to learn, so do not be afraid to ask experienced parents anything because you now belong to a new community, and you should take advantage of that.
