Plan Ahead: 3 Ways to Get Ahead of Making Your Kids’ Halloween Costumes

September 23, 2017 by Pam Maynard

You really get into making your children’s Halloween costumes – no store-bought outfits in your household! You just love to see the recipients of the hard work you put into those costumes marching down the neighborhood streets every October collecting candy and socializing with the other children. A few ways and means to stay ahead of making those costumes and have them ready on time could include the following tips:

Plan Ahead: 3 Ways to Get Ahead of Making Your Kids' Halloween Costumes

Start Early

By early, it can be as early as the day of Halloween. Observe what other youngsters are wearing. You don’t want to copy anything exactly, but it is a great way to get good ideas for the following year. The next day, shop at costume stores for accessories – they should be half price, if not cheaper. Halloween and fall fabrics should also be on sale for several days after this notorious holiday. Seek out original and unusual embroidery patterns online on sites like EmbroideryDesigns.com for a truly unique touch. Stock up on what you need and keep an eye out throughout the year for other fabrics, patterns, trim, thread, and other miscellaneous items that you will need. Thrift stores and garage sales are also great sources for inexpensive and unusual articles.

Get Organized

As you select and purchase the various pieces of next year’s Halloween outfits, separate them into different plastic tubs. As soon as you have all the pieces that you need to create the costume, start working on it even if it is only April. October has a way of sneaking up on even the best and most conscientious of us. Keep in mind that children do grow, so make the clothing a bit larger to allow for these spurts.

Be Creative

It can be difficult to start on costumes early as trends and fads change from one fall to the next. The best way to combat this is to make vintage-type costumes or something so unusual that no one else would ever think of it. Suggestions could include costumes depicting the Cracker Jack man in a sailor suit, a can of Campbell’s soup, or even a figure from history such as Joan of Arc or Pocahontas. It can be a great challenge to be original, but the outcome can be fantastic.

Plan Ahead: 3 Ways to Get Ahead of Making Your Kids' Halloween Costumes

As you can see, Halloween does not have to be a time of stress and anxiety. Getting the jump on making the costumes can save you both time and money and give you great peace of mind. And don’t forget about decorating your home. While you are seeking and assembling costumes, be sure to be adding decor that will accent your home during this spooky season.
