Top 7 Tips to Make Your Home a Safer Place for Your Family

August 26, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Human population has crossed a 7.5 billion threshold. We are living in increasingly cramped up spaces, so instances of deviant behavior and violence have become more common. Yet there is only one place of freedom you can truly call your own – home. It is the single greatest investment and source of comfort for your entire family. This is why each of us will do anything in our power to keep it protected and safe. In order to achieve this, there are several main things you should be mindful about, and they can be summed up in top 7 to make your home a safer place for you and your family.

Tips for making your home a safe place

Some simple habits

Teach your children to lock doors as soon as you can. It’s a crucial habit that needs to be instilled early on. Also, if you’ve all gone to sleep and the car is in the garage, the house might appear appealing to the burglar. Leave the key in the lock on the interior side so it cannot be picked from the outside. If you are leaving somewhere, leave a light on inside. If you can, leave a TV on – it will give the impression someone is at home. If you are going on a vacation, leave the key with a member of the family or trusty neighbor who can check your house every day.

Smoke detectors

Smoke detectors are a mandatory addition to your kitchen; however, your stove is not the only area that can catch fire. In order to reduce danger for yourself and your children, install smoke detectors on every floor of your household. If you can, place smoke detectors near bedrooms – this way, you’ll reduce the threat if the fire catches. There is also an option to hardwire smoke detectors into the electrical system within your home, so you don’t have to think about batteries. Ask your designated electrician about this option.

Alarm system

Interestingly enough, most people decide not to install the alarm system even though it is a proven way to keep your house protected. Many buildings come with several “layers” of protection from the front door to the surveillance systems, but if you live in a house, you’ll need to take initiative and install it yourself. A door triggering system and several security cameras are a good “starter” pack. However, don’t try to conceal these cameras. If visible, your security system will deter potential burglars and lower your risk profile.

A thorough season cleaning

If you leave your house to disrepair, many dangers can emerge over time. Clean the gutters regularly to reduce the water damage and potentially irreversible damage to your roof. Check your cellar and hotspots in bathroom and kitchen for mold and use the appropriate cleaning agent to take care of it before it spreads. Of course, weekend cleanups of your entire home interior are a must – if you clean the dust and other dirt regularly, it reduces a chance of anyone in your family getting sick or allergic.

The entrance area

If you are leaving somewhere and have to inform a member of your family or an impromptu visitor of your absence, don’t leave a message on the door – this is literally like inviting a burglar to break in. Additionally, never hide your keys under the doormat or close to the door – this is the first place they’ll be looking. If you want a stronger entrance door, you can opt for something more resilient like security doors, preferably of an aluminum frame with a stainless-steel surface.

Strengthen windows

Additionally, you can also strengthen the windows, arguably the weakest entry points of your household. Installing security bars or grilles on your window is not a particularly expensive way to add more safety to your home, and your bedroom and bedroom of your children are on a ground-level floor, this would probably be a smart move.

Keep your home safe

Reduce appeal for burglars

People like to grow a lot of greenery around the house, but it only makes it more appealing to burglars. If you can, remove large bushes and other bulky ornaments that can easily conceal the thief in the dead of night. If you just can’t part with your little front-yard meadow, there’s another solution – add a lot of exterior lighting with motion sensors.

Taking necessary steps to keep your family safe is the most important aspect of creating a comfortable home. All of the above-mentioned tips are reasonable aspects of security that, once implemented, provide peace of mind. With these worries out of your way, you can concentrate on boosting your family life and creating a warm environment for your children.
