Perforated Pipes: How to Handle Home Plumbing Issues

August 12, 2017 by Pam Maynard

There are times when your drains may be running slow or the garbage disposal won’t let any more food go through. It is also possible that a pipe may burst or start to crack. While these problems may seem harmless at first, they can escalate over time. Let’s take a look at how a homeowner can handle plumbing issues.

Perforated Pipes: How to Handle Home Plumbing Issues

Learn What Types of Pipe Your Home Has

The first step toward understanding how to solve a plumbing issue is to understand what type of pipes you have. As a general rule, you will use different chemicals or use different tools to resolve issues with metal pipes compared to plastic. In some cases, your home may have both types of piping, which may require a customized repair plan.

Know Where Water or Other Waste Goes

It is important to know where water, food or other waste goes after it goes down the drain or is flushed down the toilet. Knowing how your plumbing system works can make it easier to diagnose any issues that you have. It may also make it easier to fix those issues without the need to call a plumber. While not all repairs are easy, homeowners can make most of them on their own if they choose.

Know when to Call a Pro

Just because a homeowner knows what is wrong with their home’s plumbing doesn’t mean that they should try to fix issues on their own. If you can’t fix the problem with some drain gel or a plunger, it may not be worth fixing on your own. There are usually professionals like Magnolia Plumbing or similar firms around no matter what your locale that you can reach out to if you’re in need. This is especially true if you aren’t very handy or have health issues.

Sometimes a Quick Fix Can Prevent Major Problems

If you see a cracked or leaking pipe, you can wrap it with tape or weld the crack closed. That should buy you a few hours or days to make a permanent repair. Leaving cabinets open or leaving the heat on even when you aren’t home can prevent pipes from freezing. Draining the water lines when you are not home can also prevent issues if a pipe does freeze.

No matter how old a home is, there is the chance that it could suffer from a variety of plumbing issues. When taken care of properly, they may pose no long-term threat to the structural integrity of the home. Taking care of them at the first sign of trouble may also make doing so easier on your wallet.
