7 Things You Should Do When Moving Your Family into a New Home

August 4, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Packing is key, but there are far more important things than just getting your stuff together when you move your family into a new home. Some of the most important things you must do might come across as simple and well-known facts, but some might surprise you. Don’t feel bad. Sometimes it’s easy to forget the most basic aspects of any situation, and the pressure of packing, moving, and unpacking only makes you more forgetful.

Change the Locks

Calling professionals like those from A Carolina Locksmith should be the first thing you do when you have the keys to your new home. Even if your home is a brand-new builder’s special, you don’t know how many people already have a key. Pre-existing homes might have keys everywhere. Under rocks, in the handbags and on the keychains of the former owner’s friends, family members, and even cleaning companies. For your own safety and peace of mind, it’s time to change the locks.

Deep Clean the House

If you can hire someone to do this, don’t hesitate to do it. A deep clean is always a good idea in any home, especially one other people lived in first. Do you really want to sit on a toilet that once belonged to someone else before cleaning it?

Clean the Interior Cabinets

Another one of those little things you never think to do comes in the form of your cabinet shelves. If they’re dirty on the outside, you wipe them off. Do you think to clean the shelves? A quick wipe down inside your cabinets prior to putting your own belongings in there never hurt.

Find the Essentials

You’re new to the area, so you need a new doctor, new babysitter, new florist, and much more. This is helpful before you move, but it’s also helpful to spend a day looking around at what’s closest and who comes with good recommendations. This is one of those things you should discuss with your new neighbors.

Meet the Neighbors

You need recommendations for doctors and other local services, so go meet the neighbors. It’s also a nice idea to get to know who lives closest to you while allowing them to see who you are. You’ll be spending time around these people more than you imagine, so be the good person and make the introductions.

Change Your Address

It’s easy to forget to do this since it’s not something done in advance. Don’t forget to change your address with the local post office. Don’t forget to have your mail forwarded from your former address to your new one, too.

Take Some Time Off

Ask anyone who has ever moved into a new home what they wish they did, and they’ll say they wish they spent more time home from work. You need time to move, to get situated, to unpack, and to run errands while you’re in your new home. Give yourself a long weekend or even a week to get acclimated and comfortable.

Moving is always stressful, but it can be made less stressful when you do it right. The most important thing you can do when you move into a new home is change the locks and the alarm code, but there are other things you must also do. Make a list, because you have a lot to remember.
