There is nothing I fear more than one of my kids getting sick and me being powerless to help them. We take for granted that we will bring our bundle of joy home from the hospital healthy. We just assume that our babies will grow into toddlers and the toddlers will morph into a happy healthy kindergartner and… you get the idea. So many times, this is the case. But not every time. There are some mommy’s and daddy’s living out hell on earth and they’re dying inside a little more every day as they watch their babies suffer with childhood cancer.
Did you know that roughly 43 children are diagnosed with cancer in the United States – Every. Single. Day…? That number threw me for a loop, and caused me to hug my babies a little longer tonight as I tucked them into bed. Of those 43 littles, 12% will not survive this devastating disease. Sixty percent of the childhood cancer survivors suffer long term effects such as; infertility, heart disease, and secondary cancer. I can’t even imagine, but the average age for a child being diagnosed with cancer is 6. That’s still a baby y’all.
I’ve lost two grandparents to cancer. It’s so very hard to watch friends and family suffer from this devastating disease. Watching children suffer is a whole new world of hurt. It’s a world of uncertainty, fear, dread, lots of tears… there are no words for the hurt. Hurting kids, mean hurting parents and families. There is NO WAY to take that pain away except healing for that precious baby. BUT anything that brings a smile to that babies face is welcomed with opened arms by those mama’s and daddy’s!
