Own A Pool? 3 Tips For Keeping Your Kiddos Safe #MDRSummerFun

June 26, 2017 by Pam Maynard

A pool in the backyard is a fun and exciting attraction for everyone in the family. It’s a way for kids to stay busy in the summer and a way to stay active as well. When you own a pool and have young kids, you need to put a few measures in place to keep them safe while they are swimming and while they are playing around the pool. There are a few ideas that you can use that take a little time to put in place.

Proper Supervision

An adult needs to be at the pool at all times when children are swimming. The adult who is watching the children should know how to swim and should know how to call for help in the event of an emergency. If there isn’t an adult near the pool, then children should not be allowed to be in the water or in the area. A camera can be set up inside the home to monitor the pool area to see if there are children present when there isn’t an adult.

Use A Perimeter

In order to keep children out of the water when they aren’t supposed to be in the pool, put up a barrier. A fence with a security door, like those offered at Bonds Security Products, is the best solution. Make sure that the door has a latch that is positioned at a point where only adults can reach. The fence that you install should be at least four-feet high. Gates should be self-latching so that children can’t get inside once the door is shut. Another type of barrier that you can install is a safety cover over the pool. You also want to take away any ladders and steps that are used for entry into the pool. An alarm can be attached to the fence that will alert you if the door is opened.

Emergency Response

Before children get into the pool for the first time, you need to teach them how to swim and how to use proper floatation devices. Adults should know the basics of water safety and how to perform CPR. Everyone should know how to call 911 in an emergency or know how to get an adult if help is needed. Post rules about no diving and no running for the safety of those around the pool.

While a pool can be a lot of fun, it can also be dangerous if those who are swimming aren’t protected. Keep a proper barrier in place, and make sure there are tools ready in an emergency. If you follow a few safety precautions, then everyone can enjoy time in the water.
