Family Memories: The Best Sight-Seeing Vacations in the American West

June 25, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Spending time with your family and bonding together can be enjoyed by taking a vacation each year. When you want to create new memories, you can explore different types of destinations throughout the country. If you’re ready to plan an unforgettable trip, there are a few sight-seeing vacations to take in the American West that will prove to be exciting.
Fun Family Vacation memories
Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park attracts over 4 million visitors each year for its spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. As the country’s first national park, there are over 2.2 million acres to explore where you’ll find plenty of natural beauty that has been well-preserved.  Wild animals roam the land and are easy to find when hiking on trails.

Columbia River

The Columbia River is located east of Portland, Oregon and is known as one of the top spots in the country to see a high concentration of waterfalls in one setting. Take a Columbia River cruise where you can feel like a pioneer and get a glimpse of Multnomah Falls. A local guide will offer a look at the history of the location and facts about the area. You can move on to Maryhill Winery where you’ll listen to live music from musicians that board the boat and will perform a few maritime songs for your enjoyment.

Bryce Canyon

Bryce Canyon, Utah

Bryce Canyon in Utah is the perfect place to camp or hike in a vast environment for its large concentration of scenic attractions. The national park offers plenty of outdoor recreation activities where families are welcomed to fish, bike, go horseback riding, and ride over 2,500 miles of ATV trails. Bryce Canyon is known for its fiery colored stone and lush waterfalls that make for a picturesque setting. As a year-round destination, visitors can book their stay in each season and take advantage of lodging that is available on the grounds. Outdoor camping is also available in specific locations when you want to pitch a tent in the forest or stargaze in the desert at elevations that reach 4,000 to 11,000 feet. In the winter, guests can go ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

Dining and shopping opportunities are also available for those who don’t want to feel too secluded from the city.

Grand Canyon, Arizona

The Grand Canyon is one of the most famous landmarks in the world and is the result of erosion when water cutting occurred at the location for millions of years. Visitors can take guided tours of the canyon and camp overnight or stay in lodging on the grounds. The South Rim is open in each season of the year, making it easy to pay a visit in the spring or winter, but the least crowded times to visit are between the months of November and February.

The Best Sight-Seeing Vacations in the American West

Carlsbad Caverns, NM

The Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico offer a unique look at the underground setting where you can explore different mazes with the help of a guide. 119 different caves are present, which formed when the limestone dissolved in sulfuric acid. At night, you can watch hundreds of bats come out and fill the sky.

Camping is allowed in the back country, and dining is available at the Carlsbad Caverns Trading Company throughout the day.

Spending time with your family will prove to be invaluable when you plan a trip and can explore different parts of the American West together. By spending time in the right places, you can experience the natural beauty of the country and have a few adventures along the way.
