5 Ways to Ensure Toys Are Safe for Your Child

June 24, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Read Reviews

Before buying a toy for your child, read reviews of it online that other parents have written. Although every family has different needs, and no toy can please every parent, reading reviews will give you an overall sense of how safe the toy is. For example, if most reviews are negative and parents state that it somehow put their child in danger, then you know you not to buy the toy. Reading reviews before you purchase can protect your child and save you from potential regret later.

be sure toys are safe for your children

Product Liability

Whether you’re researching a toy or already have it, find out if a toy’s manufacturer offers a product liability. Essentially, product liability means that a manufacturer takes responsibility for an unexpectedly defective or dangerous product. Note that this doesn’t apply to when children swallow parts accidentally or use the toy incorrectly. Although product liability cannot prevent potential hazards, knowing a manufacturer takes responsibility for them can help can give you a sense of safety and trust in the toy.

Check labels

One of the best ways to ensure a toy is safe for your child is to read its label, so you know exactly what it is made of, and if there are any potential hazards. Look for labels stating that any paint is lead free; if you’re buying art supplies, make sure they’re nontoxic; fabrics should be flame resistant or retardant. Toy manufacturers cannot put such labels on their packages if the toy does not meet legally required standards, so you can rest assured that if your child’s toys have safety labels, they are accurate.

Pick the Right Size

Different toys are appropriate for children of different ages. When choosing a toy for your child, take their age into consideration. For infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, avoid anything small enough to swallow or with small parts that could break off. Older kids can handle smaller toys and toy parts, but if you’re buying sized toys like bikes or skates, make sure they fit your child correctly.

Supervise

Even if you’ve read every toy label, review, liability statement, and sizing guide, remember to always supervise your child during playtime. Children are imaginative, and they might come up with dangerous ways to play with toys that you’ve never thought of. If you’re supervising, you’ll be able to respond immediately if there is a problem, and you’ll learn how you can protect your child next time.
