Family Journeys: 4 Tips For Preparing Your Kids To Travel Out Of Country

April 30, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Traveling out of the country is an exciting experience, but one that can be extra stressful with children. Being prepared ahead of time will help alleviate stress levels before and during the trip to ensure that you enjoy every moment of your time out of the country. Keep these four tips in mind before embarking on your journey.

Check Paperwork

Check passports ahead of time to verify that they aren’t expired. Children’s passports are not valid as long as adults, especially infants. Some countries limit validation for young children to three years, as opposed to five years for children and ten years for adults. Give yourself plenty of time to get photos taken and paperwork processed so your trip isn’t delayed due to passport issues. Some countries also require you to have a notarized signature from one parent if you both aren’t present when traveling saying that you have permission to leave the country with the child or children.

Get your Vaccinations

Vaccinations are an absolute must before you travel outside the country. Diseases that have been eradicated here are prevalent in some other countries. Schedule appointments for your entire family at places like Entira Family Clinics to get shots for yourself and your children at least three months ahead of time. This ensures that you have time to get both the recommended and required immunizations, especially if you need to have more than one vaccination for a specific disease. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially if you’re traveling to a less developed area where an outbreak is more likely to occur.

Learn the Language

If you’re traveling to a country where English is not the native language it is helpful to teach your children some of the basic words of the native language where you’re traveling to. Teach them words such as hi, bye, thank you, you’re welcome, where and help me for starters. Knowing a few words of the language helps break through the barrier of speaking to someone in your non-native language.

Tips for traveling with your kids overseas

Bring Some of Home

Allow your child to bring something with him that reminds him of home while traveling, whether it’s a favorite blanket, stuffed animal or toy. The familiarity can make the journey a bit easier when going to a foreign environment. Keep the item in your carry on so your child has it on the plane too.

Don’t make traveling internationally any more stressful than it has to be. Prepare ahead of time and you’ll be sure to enjoy the journey you’re about to go on. This can take a lot of stress off of your shoulders and make your vacation more enjoyable for the whole family.
