New Grandparents? 4 Surprising Ways To Prep Your Home For Child Safety

April 27, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Becoming a grandparent for the first time is going to be one of the most exciting moments of your life. This transition to a new position in your family is going to come with many new challenges, but it will also be extremely rewarding. Here are a few steps you can take to make sure your home is as safe as possible before your first visit or sleepover.

Create A Safe Sleeping Area

Your children will most likely have some rules regarding how and when your grandchildren must sleep. Grandparents should spend a little time thinking about setting up a safe sleeping area that will make all parties involved as comfortable as possible. That will most likely include some type of crib that only has blankets and toys that are designed specifically for babies. You might also need to invest in a white noise machine and a night light for the area.

Schedule A Safety Inspection

Even if you think your home is relatively safe, there might be more hidden dangers than you realize. As a matter of habit, you should schedule at least one safety inspection every year with an experienced electrician, like the professionals at Beckstoffer-Welsh Inc. These contractors can make sure that your electrical system is both safe and efficient. That can also look for other unusual electrical hazards such as exposed wires or damaged outlets that are hot to the touch.

Think Like A Baby

As an older adult, it is all too easy to overlook dangerous objects and other hazards around the house. Spending a few hours carefully going through every room is the only way to be absolutely sure that your home is safe. As you inspect each room, you should try to think like a small baby or toddler. Items such as heavy books near the edge of a desk or cleaning products inside a cupboard will most likely need to be locked away or removed entirely.

Build An Emergency Kit

You should already have a well-stocked emergency kit in your home before the baby arrives, but those who are caring for young children might need to add some more supplies. Before you start babysitting, you must first invest in a child thermometer, saline drips, children’s acetaminophen, antihistamines, and calamine lotion. Your emergency kit should also contain contact information for the child’s primary doctor, a local child’s hospital, and Poison Control.

Having your grandchild over to your house for the first time is going to make you feel like a parent all over again. These few tips and tricks will give you peace of mind knowing that the newest addition to your family is going to stay safe and healthy whenever they are with you.
