Six Signs Your Child Might Need Glasses

March 4, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Going in for your family’s regular physical checkup usually includes an eye test. But those visits are few and far between and sometimes you just don’t catch everything. If you notice your child has headaches more often and has trouble reading, then it might be time to consider getting the eyes examined for glasses. If you are concerned about your children needing glasses or think it might be time for an exam, keep these signs in mind.

Headaches

If your child complains about headaches, it could be for any number of reasons. However, if they complain right after reading or doing homework, it could be because it’s hard to focus on what is being read. The strain of trying to see a board in the classroom or while reading a book would be enough to cause a headache.

Squinting

Sometimes, kids will squint while they are playing a game or to be funny. Pay attention to how your child acts while reading. If the child squints as if having trouble seeing, then it could be a sign that glasses are needed.

Holding Items Close to The Face

This is one of the common signs of needing glasses. Children don’t like to ask for help and like to be independent. If they tend to hold items close to their face or sit close to the television it might be a sign of something more.

Being Clumsy

Some children like to be funny while walking or playing. At times, they might trip and fall because they can’t see where they are going clearly. This would indicate that there might be an issue with the eyes and could result in glasses being needed, especially if the child can’t see things that are far away.

Low Grades

While this could be a sign they simply need more help in school, it could also be a sign that the child needs glasses to help with reading. If the child can’t see the work that needs to be done, then it would result in lower grades. Talk to the teacher to see if there is any help in getting the grades up once glasses are worn.

Eye Pain or Rubbing

If the child has trouble seeing, then it could cause pain or itching in the eyes from the effort put forth to focus. The child might have eyes that water on a regular basis as well. The doctor can often prescribe some type of eye drops to help with pain or itching while the glasses are worn.

Glasses can be a life-saver when it comes to children not being able to see. There are a few signs that you can look for before taking your child to an eye doctor. If any signs are present, then glasses might be needed at least on a temporary basis. Today you can get glasses online, everything from women’s glasses to children’s smaller sized frames. Don’t hesitate to set up an appointment and be sure to monitor how they adjust to new glasses as well.
