4 Things to Consider Before Starting your Landscaping Project

February 18, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Are you done with going all shades of green every time you visit your neighbors? Their landscaping design is incredible. Well, that, or a better landscaping design, could be your home.

You just have to make clear plans for achieving that greatness. Planning and preparation matter, so you have to consider a few important things before getting deep into your landscaping project. These considerations include:

  1. Your end game

What do you wish to achieve from the landscaping design? Are you landscaping for an attractive curb appeal, and would you like to have the best outdoor entertainment setting?

Are you looking for a way to increase the outdoor space for your kids to play on? Would you like to improve movement from one place to another around your home? You could also be looking for a way to reinvent the appearance of your home.

If your reasons are any of the ones listed above, then you will have a good idea on where to go next. How to get started and how to get things running. This also determines the resources you’ll need to run the project successfully.

Your lifestyle, style, personality, and preferences determine your garden’s style – cottage, dessert, Japanese, modern, tropical etc.

  1. How will the project run?

Perhaps this is the most important determinant of the landscaping project’s success or failure. Making landscaping a DIY project is important and it is cost-saving. However, you must get a professional’s guidance on the best plants to plant, the type of soil etc.

For this reason, you may consider consulting a professional in landscaping. An architect is always a good choice since they have the contacts and links to the best lawn service providers in the market. They will also advise you on cost-cutting and the advantages of some materials over others. Home décor artists may also be contacted.

When looking for a professional to carry out the landscaping project, consider asking for recommendations from your friends and family or acquaintances. Online reviews and testimonials are great information sources. However, you must evaluate the quotes given then interview the landscaping company before hiring them. You may stop this entire process if you have a landscaper you’ve worked with before and you were satisfied with their services.

  1. How will you fund the landscaping project?

What is your budget for the landscaping project? Does your budget meet your mind and heart’s desires? Professionals advise you to stick to a budget plan not exceeding 20 percent of your home’s total value.

You may consider getting alternative landscaping resources of good quality from wholesale stores or online stores. You should not, however, compromise on quality, regardless of price – unless you are certain that the quality is retained even at a lower price.

  1. Environment and climate change

For the best results, consider the sunny areas, views, shady areas, water flow, drainage system, and non-negotiable site constraints like door thresholds. Hydrozones and planting zones must also be considered.

Keep these factors in mind, and you’ll be on your way to the most intricate landscape design of your dreams.
