Awesome After-School Activities for Your Teenagers

January 24, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Teenagers should spend time in after-school activities they are interested in rather than simply watching television or playing on the computer. It’s important for kids to have a passion to follow and to motivate them or a hobby that gets them involved in the community. Here are a few ways to keep your teenage child occupied after the school day is over while also improving their life.

Awesome After-School Activities for Your Teenagers

Reading to Younger Students

Get your teenager involved in an after-school reading program designed for younger students. A preschool that has an extended day program will enjoy having a teenager read books aloud to students who are trying to learn the alphabet and new words. This can improve their teaching skills, empathy, child-caring skills and more. Check your local library to see how you might be able to get involved.

Job Shadowing Programs

If your teenager is considering their future career options, then enroll them in a job-shadowing program. With this type of after-school program, your child is paired with someone who works a particular job. Your kids can learn more about working as an engineer or attorney, and can make network connections to help them in future.

Sports

When your teenager is sitting at a desk in school throughout the day, they may gain weight or lose muscle mass. To ensure your teenager is getting enough exercise, find a sporting activity such as gymnastics, swimming, or golf. Not only will your student have an opportunity to have a workout, but they will learn about sportsmanship and gain a skill they can use the rest of their lives.

Improve the Environment

Your teenager probably cares about the earth’s environment and there are tons of programs that want volunteers to help with picking up the trash in a park or on a beach. A group of teenagers can sort the trash before taking it to a recycling center for proper disposal. See what other programs are available in your community.

Volunteering and Collecting

Teenagers can help other worthy causes by placing donation boxes for clothing in their school or neighborhoods. After the containers are full, your daughter or son can go to the clothing donation pickup and sort through the garments to help distribute the items to homeless shelters in your city.

Attend Tutoring Sessions

If your son or daughter is having problems with a particular subject in school, then find a tutor to help them make improvements. Sometimes a teenager requires one-on-one attention to learn more about trigonometry, chemistry, or Spanish. Within a few weeks of participating in tutoring sessions, your child will feel more confident and have better grades.

Before enrolling your teenage child in any after-school activity, make sure to discuss it with them first. Your child may have a preference for a certain type of activity and they will be less resistant about participating in a program if it is something they enjoy.
