How to Help Your Children Find Their Passion (and Potentially a Career)

January 21, 2017 by Pam Maynard

The dreams and aspirations of a small child often end up changing with time. Not surprisingly, life’s journey reveals more possibilities than even the most vivid child’s imagination could dream up. Wise parents have embraced the idea that a child’s passions can lead them to a career they can spend a lifetime being excited about. Here are just a few things parents are doing to support their children’s passions and possible future career choices.

How to Help Your Children Find Their Passion (and Potentially a Career)

Travel

Travel is a gift of adventure that exposes the senses in a way that nothing else can. Meeting new people and seeing things that are out of the norm is educational but can also feel very spiritual.

Exposing children to other cultures, historical places and people of every spectrum of society broadens their perspective and appreciation for that which is different from what they encounter daily. It feeds curiosity and can be an inspiration to a wealth of careers all over the globe.

World History

Visiting museums, reading about and discussing world history are ways of deeply connecting with children while learning about the events that shaped the world today. Providing children with interesting conversation builds upon their fascination and curiosity.

Children introduced to history at an early age are at an advantage when it comes to understanding world affairs today and the chain of history that led to these events. Universities that offer online master of history degrees are eager to build upon early history passions and hone the tools that are ideal for a career in history.

This article on History.org.uk is a great read and puts to rest the notion that a degree in history will not yield a viable career.

Free Thinking

An important part of letting a child develop their own passions is letting them think freely and make decisions about what they like and don’t. If a parent tells a child that bugs are gross and should be squashed at first sight, it could seem conflicting to a little one who finds the bugs fascinating, beautiful and feels deep inside that there must be some greater purpose for the tiny creature. This child could be a future entomologist if allowed to form a passion for the tiny creatures in our world.

Human Connection

One way of sincerely connecting with other human beings is volunteering. Offering time to those in need is great way of giving and truly engaging with those experiencing social and economic disparity. Children are brilliant little beings and one spark of compassion can often lead to an inferno of passion for the human condition, potentially leading to jobs in health care, charitable and social work, law and a myriad of other jobs.

Passion is built through experience that, whether physical or mental, advances into an emotional hunger. Creating opportunities for children to experience many things in their lives will lead to happy, passionate children who, as adults, incorporate those passions into building a sustaining and rewarding life.
