How to Organize Your First Move as a Family

January 14, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Moving for the first time is often an exciting transition for families looking forward to living in a new or bigger home. Although the process can be enjoyable, packing up all your personal belongings and furniture can make it a daunting process. To organize your first move and avoid complications, there are a few important tips to follow.

How to Organize Your First Move as a Family

Organize Everything with a Planner

There are a number of tasks and activities involved with moving as a family, making it important to store all of the information you need in one place. Use a planner to write down the dates of when certain boxes need to be packed or the time your movers will arrive. You can also add a checklist in the planner to ensure that you perform tasks that include forwarding your mail, transferring your utility services, and selling or donating items that you want to leave behind. Keep your receipts and contracts in here as well.

Hire Professional Help

You can increase the efficiency of your move by hiring professionals to assist with packing up the personal belongings and transporting them to the new property. Professional movers will have special equipment and tools, which can help you to avoid an injury when lifting heavy items. You can also hire a service like AmericanAutoShipping.com to ship your car, which will make it easier to transport the vehicle instead of driving it across the state or country.

Purge the Home

Clean each room of the home and remove items that haven’t been used in the last year to ensure you don’t pack too many items as you transport them to the new location. Remove clothing, children’s toys, and home decor that is taking up space and isn’t used frequently.

Pack a Box of the Essentials

Many people forget there are several items they’ll need to have the first day they live in their new house, which may all be packed away in boxes and can be difficult to find. Pack a box of the essentials that you can use, which will include bed sheets, towels, hand soap, toiletries, food, paper towels, and cell phone chargers to make it easier to settle in.

Although it can be challenging to stay organized as you move your family, there are several ways to avoid chaos with the process. By following the right tips, you can enjoy a smooth and efficient process that makes it easier to transition into your new setting.
