Cleaning Creativity: How to Get Those Hard-to-Reach Corners

December 15, 2016 by Pam Maynard

The details matter when it comes to cleaning. If dirt and debris are left behind, then it can attract bugs, bacteria, and even mold. Getting the dirt out of tight spaces isn’t easy though, especially when it comes to tight corners in the laundry room, garage, or kitchen. Luckily, there are a few cleaning secrets the professionals use that can help you get the job over with in no time.

Vacuum First

Use the smallest attachment you have for your vacuum cleaner to clean the loose debris out of the area first. Brooms will just push it around and make a bigger mess. If the mouth of the attachment isn’t small enough, then fit a paper towel roll over the end. You might have to tape it in place. Then, bend it into the shape you need.

Natural Cleaning Agents

Strong household cleaners aren’t necessary unless the area is excessively dirty. A combination of dishwashing liquid, peroxide, and vinegar will usually work just fine to get rid of the toughest stains. Spray it into the cracks and crevices that you can’t reach very well. Then, use a clean sponge brush to wipe the area out.

Use Sticky Tools

For delicate areas that could be damaged easily, try using masking tape or a sticky lint roller to remove the dust. This trick works great for lampshades, mattresses, and keyboards. Don’t try it on painted areas that haven’t been sealed though. Tape can pull the paint off. There are special gel cleaning blocks that are sold in most stores that sell professional cleaning supplies that are effective too. All you have to do is press them on the area that you want to clean and pull the dirt off. Their surface stays sticky even after you rinse the dirt away with water.

Cotton Swabs

These tiny tools are good for more than cleaning out your ears. They work well for oven door edges, window sill corners, and dusty trinkets. Dampen each cotton swab with a little diluted vinegar for the most thorough cleaning. Be sure to wipe in only one direction. Rubbing the cotton swabs back and forth will spread the dirt around.

And remember, it didn’t take overnight for all the little areas of your house to get dirty so it is going to take time to clean them all. Work in grids throughout the house until you finish one room at a time. If you do have pests like termites, spider problems, or mice droppings make sure you talk to a professional about help with removing diseases they may have left behind. In no time your house will be sanctuary again!
