Relocating Your Family: 3 Tips To Help Your Kids Cope

December 15, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Moving children from the home that they know and love can be difficult. They are comfortable with the layout of the home, the schools that they attend and often have friends who come over. There might be times when you have no choice but to move because of a job or because you need a lower monthly payment for the home. There are a few things that you can do to make moving as easy for your children as possible so that they don’t feel like they are leaving everything behind.

Moving In Party

When you get everything settled in your new home, have a party for your children and their friends. Prepare a favorite meal or a few fun snacks that your children like. Invite the guests to spend the night if there is enough room so that all of the children can talk about things that they have been doing since the move. This is a fun option if your children have to change schools so that they can stay in touch with their friends. You could also have a going away party before leaving if you’re going to another area of the state or to a different state. Make sure your children exchange phone numbers and addresses so that they can stay in touch with friends.

Helping Out

One of the ways to help children feel comfortable about the move is to let them help with the packing and the sorting. They can pack the contents of their bedroom just as they want, and they can help to set up a new bedroom once you get to the new house. Hiring a moving company, like Midway Moving & Storage, can sometimes make things a little easier for children as the movers often have chores that the children can do during the process of taking things from the house to the truck. The moving company can also help to get the larger pieces of furniture out of the way while ensuring that everything makes it safely to the new home so that you can comfort your children during the moving process.

Routines

Try to get your children into the same routines as before. This includes classes at school, any groups that the children were in before the move and special activities that include sports. If they feel that their routine won’t change, then it will make it a little easier to settle into a new home and environment.

When you move to a new home, it’s important to let children know that you are there for them to talk to about how they feel. Make sure children understand what will take place and things that will happen with school and activities. Plan a party or get children to help with moving in general so that they feel involved.
